RIP Eric Delaney

Just heard the news that Drummer/Percussionist Eric Delaney passed away on Friday last. He was a terrific performer and I had the pleasure of supporting him on some great shows over the years not only with our band in the seventies, but in the eighties as a solo performer. Eric was 87 and a great drummer and entertainer. Thanks for the great great jazz music. RIP Eric.

Sorrry to hear about Eric, I worked with him in Benidorm a few times, he spent a few years performing at the Talk Of the Town there.

He really was a great talent & definitely one of the very first in the UK to raise the profile of drums and percussion way back in the 1950s. I recall being amazed by him (as a small child) on Sunday Night At The London Palladium. Usually he was rushing between huge free - standing tom toms beating the hell out of familiar melodies such as "Oranges and Lemons". I seem to remember that he wore sparkling / glittery jackets and was always perspiring freely because of his energetic exertions.

Eric was an early inspiration for me and I too remember him on television playing the drums and literally jumping over to the tympani to energetically create sounds I could only dream of.
I am sure he was an inspiration to many drummers and he will be missed.

We appeared on the same bill as Eric back in the early Sixties - an evening I will never forget.
He was a smashing bloke - very sociable to us - and, on stage, he was the ultimate showman and a fantastic percussionist.

But the reason I will never forget the evening was that he stopped in the middle of his drum solo - I think during Big Noise from Winetka - to tell my missus (girlfriend then) to shut up.
"No body talks when I'm on", he said, much to the delight of the crowd (and me).

I started drumming in the early sixties on an Eric Delaney snare drum.
It looked very impressive, bright orange with sparkling glitters and chrome rims.
It was standing on a black wooden tripod, which also featured a thin vertical metal rod
with a tiny cymbal, which sounded, well, simple.., but the set looked a bit like
on that first Shadows photo I had, where Tony Meehan is sitting with only part of his drumset.
It came with a square 45 rpm cardboard record with Eric's verbal instructions.
Alas, little of the info was usable for Shadows music, and the entire drum was made of plastic,
except for the long screws. The upper rim broke rather quickly,
probably because I tightened the screws somewhat uneven...

So the name Eric Delaney was always remembered; I hadn't the slightest idea who he was though.
So thanks for your information! I will look for a picture of him on the internet (Youtube?)

One of my friends has a signed copy of Eric Delaney's album 'Skin Ed'. I think that's what it's called anyway. It must have come out around 1980, as it has a version of Toccata on it that bears an uncanny resemblance to sky's top 5 hit. I've heard it and I'm pretty sure it sounds OK. Anyway, all he wanted to know was, is it worth anything? I have a feeling he wants to sell it, maybe on eBay. If so, how much should he be looking for? He asked me to ask around, so I am doing so.

If anyone's interested, let me know. Otherwise, any ideas as to what it's worth?
