Footpedals - for Maurice!

Postby BobGreg » 15 Oct 2009, 11:17

Having bumped into Maurice at the NIA, when we went to see the absolutely stunning Cliff and The Shadows performance, I was reminded of BungleFlint's usage of a large collection of footpedals mounted on a board. Both Bruce and Hank also use a collection in the current tour.

However, I went to our local Gap Jazz Gig evening last Friday where I saw Chris Garrick (violins 4 to 8 string variants!) and John Etheridge (guitar) playing a range of music from conventional jazz to Peter Gabriel. An equally stunning evening, but on a differebt plain to the current tour, particularly as I was about a yard away from the performers on a very low stage!

When it came to the "wired session" and more modern interpretations were being played I was fascinated by their expert usage of setting up multi-tracking using the PodLine 6 units to record in sync with one another short backing pieces and then revert to playing their separate interplays with the firm backdrop of sound they'd set up on the Pods!

This brings me back to the topic of footpedals - so impressed was I that I took the attached photograph of the footpedal collection to share with Maurice - beat that for a collection of floor pedals!

The other significant feature was that these were not for the guitarist but for the violinist!

Anybody else have such a large footpedal combination?

Sorry about the picture size - I tried not to get it full aize without success! Need a bit of coaching!

Tried editing the size of the photo without much success - sorry how big it is - the photo I mean!

If you ever get the chance to see those two virtuosos playing live don't miss the opportunity

Hi Bob!
That heading took me by surprise! I was interested to see that on another thread you mentioned being a fan of Diana Krall. It just so happens that I have all her recorded work on CD along with a superb DVD, 'A Night in Paris' which is just sheer musical perfection, particularly the bossa nova arrangements. I also saw John Etheridge some years ago- I think he played for a while with the Diz Dizley Trio- they often featured Stephan Grapelli on jazz violin when he was over here, doing the Django Rheinhardt 'Hot Club of France' type stuff. Funny that Hank's now moved into that arena! I was lucky to see Martin Taylor with Grapelli at Wolverhampton Civic Hall back in the 80's- that was some concert!
My pedal board still survives in a refined form- it used to have a Zoom 508 echo unit along with a Boss sustain/overdrive, and a Boss Chorus pedal and Morley volume pedal. These days, I now use a superb George Dennis Volume/Phaser pedal, Marshall Blues pedal (overdrive for Lady of the Morning intro) and a Boss Chorus pedal all contained in a hinged custom made box for instant packing (in theory!). I remember playing once upon a time (a long time ago I might add!) at the Friday night social prior to Shadowmania, and a chap from the States photographed the famous pedal board while I was mid-instrumental !!...totally ignored me!!
I'll post a piccie when I get a chance!

Maurice ;)

Hi Maurice!

Glad I got your attention!

Interestingly enough I have all of Diana Krall's material both on CD and DVD plus some material when she was playing as a relatively unknown singer-pianist working in Zurich in 1988 - "Vince Benedetti meets Diana Krall" recorded in 1989!

Have seen her live at Royal Festival Hall and twice at Royal Albert Hall plus last year in the summer in the pouring rain, sitting in a deck chair at Kenwood House in the middle of Hampstead Heath getting absolutely soaked. She even changed her repertoire to suit the occasion -Stormy Weather!

We are very fortunate to get some great jazz artists comming to our local "Goring Gap Gigs" - had Scott Hamilton some years ago, George Melly (former President of our jazz club), Chris Barber (club's current president), RAF Squadronnaires came a couple of months ago and shortly Akker Bilk (November). Jamie Cullum came several times in his early years. Quite a number of the performers have or are about to appear at Ronnie Scots - prices range between £10 -£18 per head - a bit cheeper than the NIA!

Look forward to your footpedal picture - but I have to say I was very impressed with the usage of the Line 6 DL4 Stompbox Modeler - at least I waited until the interval to take the photograph!
