Sounds of the Shadows

Does anyone know if 'Sounds of the Shadows and 'From hank, bruce, brian and john' is available in mono on CD? I have the stereo versions but to complete the collection i would like the mono ones. I have searched but can't find them anywhere.
Also, is 'Hank Marvin' available in mono? I have a stereo copy on vinyl (and CD) and there is a serial number of the back of the vinyl copy that indicates that a mono version was released but i can't find a reference to it anywhere. Also, who is the woman on the cover?

Hi

Fron Hank Bruce Brian and John came out in 1999 as a digipak with both stereo and mono tracks. As for Hank Marvin it was released in mono but i think only on LP.

Hope this helps

It's a strange way in which EMI Records took care of the re-issue and digital remaster programme of The Shadows' first nine studio albums, now in CD digi-pak format.
"The Sound Of The Shadows" (1965) was issued in July 1997 in stereo only, while the original album was issued in both mono and stereo formats. "Shadow Music" (1966) was the first album to be re-issued in mono and stereo, in June 1998. Then came "The Shadows" (1961) in January 1999, "Out Of The Shadows" (1962) and "Dance With The Shadows" (1964) in February 1999, "Jigsaw" (1967) and "From Hank, Bruce, Brian And John" (1967) in March 1999, these all in both mono and stereo formats. Finally, "Shades Of Rock" (1970) was issued in April or May 1999 and "Rockin' With Curly Leads" (1973) in May 1999, these both in stereo only, as were the original album releases on vinyl.

Hank's first solo album from 1969 was his only album to be still issued in mono and stereo formats on vinyl. All CD issues feature only the stereo mixes of that album and all of his other solo tracks from that period.
Coincidentally, the exact same happened with Brian's first solo album "Change Of Direction" from 1967.

I am not sure that at the time of the recording of "Sounds of the Shadows" there was still different takes for mono an stereo releases.
In France at this time there was no more separate mono an stereo releases. Since the mid sixties, all albums were in "mono compatible" stereo, called here "gravure universelle" (universal cut).

The woman featured on the cover of Hank Marvin's eponymous 1969 LP (which has only appeared in mono on vinyl) was his wife Carole.

Apart from being mono or stereo, the following tracks were different on the original stereo issue as opposed to the original mono issue:
1. "The Shadows": tracks in mono and stereo identical.
2. "Out Of The Shadows": "Perfidia" featured overdubs on the mono version, absent on the stereo version.
3. "Dance With The Shadows": "Blue Shadows" was in mono on both the mono and stereo issue, but the mono mixes differed from each other in 'enhancement', as Malcolm Campbell and Les Woosey described it. "Dakota" fades out at the very end on the mono version, whereas Licorice's harmonica stops at the end of the stereo version. Also, "French Dressing" was in mono on the mono and stereo issues of the album, but in the exact same mix.
4. "The Sound Of The Shadows": tracks in mono and stereo identical.
5. "Shadow Music": "Benno-San" was mismastered on the initial mono pressing of the album, in that Brian's percussion overdubs are not complete, whereas they are on the stereo mix. About three weeks after release, the complete stereo mix was mixed down to mono and subsequent mono pressings featured the 'second mono mix'. "Don't Stop Now" has the same problem with incomplete guitar overdubs on the mono mix, not such a problem on the stereo mix. "March To Drina" in mono has two introductory bars, whereas the stereo version has four.
6. "Jigsaw": "Tennessee Waltz" in mono is over three minutes and features heavy power chords from Hank at the end, while the stereo version fades out much earlier and omits this climax.
7. "From Hank, Bruce, Brian And John": Malcolm and Les disagree with me here (Malcolm and Les, please correct me if I'm wrong!), but in my perception, the lines sung by Hank "I don't care how much money I gotta spend, got to get back to my baby again" are different to my ears in mono, compared to the stereo version. The intonation is different on that passage, while the rest of the song is the same in mono and stereo.

And the pic on the back is from the NME Poll Winner's Concert at Wembley Arena in May 1969. Hank is playing Lara's Theme.
