...and me - it says clearly on the label: The Apaches play the hits of The Shadows.

Indeed. "20 years of the Shadows performed by Shades of Grey". Hard to imagine how that could be mistaken for anything else.

My point in starting this thread was not to criticise anyone from making a cover version of a Shadows recording but to point out the misleading way in which the cover is laid out.

Indeed Andrew the cover does say "20 years of the Shadows performed by Shades of Grey" but they have ensured that "performed by Shades of Grey" is many times smaller than the "20 years of the Shadows" and is positioned well down towards the bottom of the cover.

These are of course my opinions but from the replies it would appear that others agree.

Since Shadows members have access to these postings, I'm sure their lawyers will now be aware :)

Hi Roger

No problem with your original post, however I felt that Curley's suggestion that those of us who bought the Apaches / Shades of gray CDs were somehow conned was slightly insulting. I've been buying Shadows records for 50 years, including cover versions, and am unlikely to mistake a tribute CD for the real thing, bearing in mind the track listing, label and price.

I have to agree with George, I've been collecting Shadows 'music' for maybe a couple of years less, maybe 48 years, and my collection also contains many albums, cassettes and CD's by artists covering the music played by The Shadows. I have never felt I have been 'conned' and have always been quite aware of what I am buying.

If its a cover or tribute dont hide it in the small print because people do get taken into buying what they think is the real thing and that is the trick of marketing the product with a misleading cover..it makes big money ££££s

and George if you feel insulted by my suggestion of people being conned...its true and why on earth anyone who is a Shadows fan would buy a cover album is beyond me!

Its like being back in the 1970's and buying cheap MFP Music For Pleasure albums because you could not afford the real thing.

Having said this where can I go to see Shades of Grey and The Apaches play live, are they doing holiday camps, theatres or pubs?
Then people would not have to buy cheap Cd's or in otherwords Bootleg recordings of The Shadows, and I hope they have permission and are paying the said royalties and PRS to The Shadows.

Roger you are bang on in pointing out this issue of in which the misleading covers are laid out I agree totally with you.

The Apaches / Shades of Grey are probably session men. I doubt very much if they ever appeared in public. As to why I would buy cover versions? Because I am interested in the music. These particular CDs do offer some variations on the original arrangements which I think are quite listenable. These are not bootlegs, they are produced by reputable - albeit budget - labels. I'm quite happy to watch tribute bands at Pipeline or Shadowmania play this great music, and I am quite happy to have some cheap albums on the shelf beside my genuine Shadows albums.

But it gets worse...

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a 1968 album* by Hugo Montenegro (on CD), and apart from the fact that I know the whistler is the notorious Muzzy Marcellino (he of The High And The Mighty fame), I have no idea of who the other musicians are (except for Montengro's arranging and conducting).

I don't suppose I should have bought it, really.

I'm going to get rid of all my classical and symphonic stuff as well (because I haven't a clue of the identity of anyone on them, except for the conductors - and the composers).

Thanks for the advice.
