Hi, Luc,
I'll be honest - I don't think that either of those pedals (the '65 Deluxe Reverb or the '65 Reverb) would be a big help in getting an authentic Shadows sound. And I say that as a lover of Fender amplifiers (I have a '65 Reissue Deluxe Reverb combo and a Twin Reverb).
I'm sure they're both good pedals - and if the "Deluxe Reverb" pedal helps to get the sound of the Deluxe Reverb amp, that's great too. But for a good Shadows-type sound, you need a good multiple-repeat echo rather than reverb. A Yamaha Magisctomp or an Alesis Q2 (if you can find one), or maybe the new Line 6 M5. Even a WEM Copicat...
BUT, seeing that you have bought the unit, I assume that you bought it for the sounds it produces (surf, country, clean reverb for a jazz sound, etc).
On the Fender Deluxe Reverb amplifier and on the Twin reverb amplifier (not pedals), the reverb control is unbelievably sensitive: you can't turn up it past three without it sounding like you're at the wrong end of a cathedral. So if the pedal version has the same sensitivity, keeping the reverb level (mix) control down at the low end will give better results.
On the level problem, if you're sure that your cables are alright, perhaps the impedances are still wrong and maybe the pedal is meant for use in the effects loop of the amplifier. Does your amp have an effects loop? Only one or two of mine do...
Best wishes,
JN
