Hank Marvin's Guitar Tutor

Postby iefje » 14 Sep 2011, 09:27

I was listening to Hank Marvin's Guitar Tutor a couple of days ago. I have got both the original 1991 2 cassette/book edition and the 2002 2CD/book edition of the set. For my personal use, I made a CDR of all musical tracks, together with all the backing track versions of those tracks.

Some tracks really remind me of Shadows originals. There is a track (the title of which escapes me at the moment), which sounds very similar to "Scotch On The Socks". Another one has the title of "The Secret Life Of Squimby Nurox", which is very similar to "The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt". Interestingly, both of those last titles incorporate the two nicknames for British actor Richard O'Sullivan.

Apart from three arranged traditional tracks, "Yankee Doodle", "Au Clair De La Lune" and "Skip To My Lou", all others are originals by Hank. I was wondering about the personnel. Hank certainly played all lead guitar and very probably also rhythm guitar parts. Some tracks feature live bass guitar. The drum tracks are, to my ears, created with a drummachine. Some tracks feature some sort of 'sampled bass', instead of live bass guitar and also synthesizer accompaniment. As we know, Hank was already very capable of playing piano in the early days and he also played most synthesizer parts on his 1982 solo album "Words And Music", so I think Hank also played those parts on the guitar tutor.

I'm very interested in this, so please correct me if I'm wrong! ;)
