Jet Diamonds Idea?

Postby d jones » 20 Sep 2011, 19:23

Hi All

Maybe one for Rob to think about? Just thinking about the chances of Diamonds been rerecorded for the Jet Harris Fund. With todays recording technology would'nt i t be good to do the duet with Duane eddy, seeing that they both had a great admiration of one anothers work!

Jet was genuinely thrilled to have been in contact with Duane Eddy during the latter part of his life. My understanding is that any plans re: recording a joint version of "Diamonds" were only ever informal and nothing official was ever agreed. I do believe though, that Duane was certainly considering recording "Diamonds" at some point in the future. Jet was extremely busy with his huge Marty Wilde tour - and, sadly, his illness then took hold. Duane meanwhile was already in the throes of finishing off his own new project and then kept busy promoting it. As we all know, Jet sadly passed away before any potential project with Duane could come to fruition.

Duane is due to return to the UK at some point and he's certainly keen to do more recording with Richard Hawley. Who knows? Maybe they might consider doing a version of "Diamonds"?? Now, this is pure speculation on my part and nothing more, what with modern technology being what it is - there are many extant multi - track recordings of Jet performing "Diamonds" - so a posthumous joint effort could, in theory, be a possibility!!! But.....it was only ever a vague possibility that Duane and Jet might get together - never official. Likewise - should Duane record again with Richard Hawley - then it's by no means absolutely certain that "Diamonds" would still be on the agenda - but it's a wonderful thought.

Bests.....Rob :D

Hi Rob

Many thanks for your reply. What made me think about it was that i'd been converting CD to HDs and came across unbelievable which involved electronically puttting Nat King Cole on a new recording with his daughter Natalie

My understanding (from reading the auto-biog of George Martin) is that Capitol Records were quite advanced in the 1950s and were one of the first majors to have multi-track recording, albeit in the form of three-track tape rather than four or more. The orchestral part was recorded "live" in stereo, with the vocal recorded from an isolation booth onto the third track (rendered in stereo in the final mix via a stereo reverb chamber). Isolating the vocal part would be pretty easy as long as the three-track master still existed. For earlier recordings recorded in straight mono or straight stereo, it would be rather less easy.

Hi,

Just to add a little background information to the above - Rob is right when he says that Jet was thrilled to have received the email from Duane Eddy congratulating Jet on his MBE. However, there were never any plans (from Jet) to record a joint version of Diamonds and nothing was ever discussed with Jet regarding this. Having said that, I'm sure Jet would have been thrilled with the idea had it ever been raised.

Jet was not in contact with Duane himself although, as you say Dave, they had great admiration for each other's work. Geoff Barker (being a mutual friend of Jet and Duane) had hoped to set up a meeting between Jet and Duane in 2010. Sadly, for various reasons the logistics proved impossible much to Jet's disappointment.

Best wishes
Audrey

Just an idea, there are a collection of talented bass guitarists in and around the Shadows Community who, being bass players, are rarely in the limelight. Perhaps a carefully compiled cd featuring Alan, Licorice, Mark, Mo, Bill, etc. with or without electronic trickery....(it would be wonderful if this allowed John Rostill to be included) to add to Jet's fund efforts?
