Rosemary, I think your best bet for a is Manila, which is not too far from you, relative to the UK. Play one afternoon with Anna, whom you've met in this or the other forums, who plays bass and can always get her drummer, rhythm guitarist, and keyboardist (for At;antis, Wonderful Land) from her former all-female band to join. She played with them after a long lay-off the other weekend; see her note and a photo of the band in her most recent post in the bass forum, under ":Hofner." Plan on a vacation here (we have nice beaches too) and throw in a jamming session.

Hi Rosemary,

I have just read your thread re female guitarsist on youtube and thought you would like to know that the lady is Margaret Butler a member of both the Tyneside and Northumberland Shadows Guitar Clubs based in the North East of England.
The video was taken at the clubs annual Shadows Summer Festival which took place in June this year.

Hi Jim and Andy
Jim: Thanks. Margaret is a very good player and it sounds like it must have been a great event!

Andy: You're right. Manila is a lot closer to us out here in Australia. I'll have a read of Anna's post. Thanks.

Best wishes
Rosemary

Hi
Not sure I count as a guitarist but I certainly class myself as a fan! I do dabble a little with the guitar and am happy playing along at home to Shadows tracks (as well as general rock'n'roll and rockabilly) but as for playing in public- I think I need to improve a bit- well quite a bit really :) My equipment isn't up to the standards of some as I play at home purely at home for my enjoyment- it is great being able to blast out 'Quatermasster Stores' or something gentle like 'Peace Pipe'. I currently have an left handed Aria STG-003 (it is the Strat copy with maple neck, rosewood finger board and three single coil pickups ) in sunburst as the red one was not available in left handed mode! I know it is not the 'correct' kit but my playing is purely for my personal enjoyment and I'm unlikely to ever grace a stage or need a genuine Strat and Vox AC30s!

Hi Natalie
Great to hear you're playing too and obviously enjoying it as much as I do. I don't suppose you live anywhere near Brisbane, Australia? :) I'd love to meet local Shadows players.
Best wishes

Sorry Rosemary but I am a long way from you- in the English Midlands near to Coventry! I am very tempted to tag along to one of the Shadows guitar clubs as mentioned in this forum and take my guitar along with me. I could even be tempted to have a go at playing- can't be too many left handed blonde female guitarists (term used very loosely!) around. What I think would be useful would be the advice given by those who can play (as long as it was constructive and not to go and jump into the River Avon or something- taking my guitar with me! :D ) I have never had a lesson and can't play any chords- I play by ear only. :?

Natalie, please DO go along to a club. Ours, The West Of Wales Shadows and Guitar Club, is probably a bit too far (I used to live in Nuneaton and still have to make the long trip back there every so often!), but you'd be very welcome if you were in the area. We have a lady member who had never played a guitar before, she just came to listen. Now she has two guitars and plays at every meeting. I'm sure that whichever club you go to you'll receive nothing but encouragement, constructive criticism and lots of useful advice and tips. Go for it!

One other thing, chords are VERY important, even if you don't want to play rhythm. Knowing chords is a big help when picking out the notes in melodies and will help you to know the fretboard much better.

Hi Natalie
Thanks for your reply.

From all I've read and from videos I've seen, the Shadows Clubs look like lots of fun and would be well worth joining and I'm sorry we don't have one here or I'd join straight away. :)

I'm not very good at chords either and find some impossible to play because my fingers don't reach but the more I play and especially now I'm adding double stops and other techniques to my lead playing, I've found some chords a lot easier now. For instance I couldn't play Eb at all when I started playing last year no matter how much I practised it and now without having practised it, I can play it because the strength in my fingers has built up. I think chords are much harder to learn than lead. The chord shapes are easy enough. It's just trying to reach them that I find a problem sometimes but in time I think they become easier.

Best wishes
Rosemary
