I did an open mic the other night and the act before me was so bad they were still booing at the end of my spot.

well they may not be carbon copies, but does that matter? after all see any live band playing their own hits and they never sound the same as the record, but, from the clip of Johny Be Good, they seem to have a pretty large crowd who all seem to be enjoying themselves, so in my book, job done.

Personally I'd much rather hear a band's own rendition of a number than an exact recreation of the original record, whilst I accept it's very hard to play note for note perfect, and probably very satisfying when some one says " you sound just like the original", but how much more satisfying if you play your own interpretation and somebody says "Hey that's great".

Think of any major recording artist who releases an album of other peoples hits and they always produce something different, you may not personally like them all, but they do sell.

But back to the original subject, good luck to a band who can fill a place that large and put smiles on peoples faces.

Well said, Geoff.

The constant ridiculing of Shadows cover bands reflects poorly on this site and its members. Members of a site that aims to keep the Shadows name alive post complaints about bands that try to do exactly that? Shame on you.

I agree. They aren't by any means a bad tribute band & good on them for getting up & having a go. We've only got the recordings on their site to go by, but they sound competant enough & seem to be getting plenty of gigs. I think our Lead guitarist has seen them a year or two back at 'The Regis' club in Cradley Heath. If I recall he said they were reasonably good live with the Shads stuff, but the vocals weren't too clever & they lacked presentation skills, at the time.

I ask a question about a band I know nothing about to see if it would be worth paying a fiver to see them.
In looking at the website and listening to the soundfiles I think they're crap.

Shall I not say that because some people here say I shouldn't ?

If only everyone was as honest as you Ecca, the recent Shadowmania reviews showed that you can't be honest without the risk of a horses head in your bed . . . . . .
For the record, I wouldn't pay a fiver to see them either on the basis of those clips on their website, but that's my opinion and it's appreciated that everyone has one but I don't have to agree with them. :)

I think I saw someone at Shadowmania with a T shirt for 'Into the Shadows' but never got the chance to follow him and find out -diplomatically - about the band.

The web address on the shirt, though, was www.shadowmusic.co.uk which I thought was a bit odd...

Support for genuine 'Shadows cover bands' is one thing, however support for bands that butcher Shads music to get the punters in is another thing altogether - and even worse hide behind the Shadows name to lure the paying audience. Prime example of this was the recent 'tour' in Australia by local artist Marty Rhone, who's posters featured in giant letters 'Cliff and The Shadows -Together Again' with a doctored pic of him looking like Cliff as the main art component. To see who actually was appearing at those shows, you had to read the very, very small print at the bottom and I know quite a few 'elderly' people who were sucked in by that lot.

In my opinion once you advertise the name of a band or artist on your own band posters etc, you become a 'tribute' band, and 'Tribute' band should be just that, make it very clear that is what you are, pay 'tribute' to the artists you are depicting, play it the way the audience would expect, not present a 'rough copy'. If you want to play Shads music your own way, go ahead, artists like Tommy Emmanuel for instance do that all the time (his version of 'Flingel Bunt' for one), but they don't try to sell it as something it isn't. :|

I took my wife to The Thorns Inn Brierley Hill to see a band called "Into The Shadows" last year.
All of the advertising was just "The Shadows" even the sign outside the Pub, No mention of "into"
Even the drums read "The Shadows" with "Into" hidden away on the edge of the drum.
When they finally started nearly an hour late they played a few Shadows numbers badly and the rest was rock & roll numbers
It seemed just like an ego trip for the Rhythm guitarist who handled the singing as well.
The audience numbered about 20 at the most which I think included their own "fans"
After about half an hour this had dwindled down to about 8
As we had paid to get in we stuck it out to the end and wished we hadn't.
I had spoken to someone outside before we went in who was involved with a Shads tribute band and had come to check out the competition
I spoke to him as we were leaving and made the comment that there was no competition for him to worry about.

Looking at their website from what I can recall it looks like the same band apart from the lead guitarist who i am sure was a lot younger

I cetrtainly won't be paying to see them again, in fact I won't go to see them not even if it's free

Bob.... you mustn't say derogatory things about this band you naughty boy !
You must say that 'they're not too bad' and how good it is that they're 'keeping the music alive'
and 'shame on me' for admonishing you.

P.S. When are you coming to see the Hankies on a Tuesday in Great Wyrley ?
