Do you know who plays that ?

Postby Didier » 04 Oct 2011, 08:54

A member of our French Shadows' forum posted the link to these recordings : http://www.deezer.com/en/music/the-shad ... ows-415808
Does anyone know who recorded that ? of course it's not the Shadows, although the name is being used...

Hello Didier,
I'm sure that there was a whole thread about this a couple of years or so ago. I could be wrong - but I seem to recall that it was the recordings put out sometime ago by 'The Shades Of Grey' - which someone had repackaged & very naughtily tried to pass it off as being by the Shads themselves. Maybe George or Jim (or someone who knows how to search former threads in more detail than me) will have chapter & verse on this.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your answer. I have found an album by "The Shades of grey" : http://www.mp3va.com/shades-of-grey-20- ... ws-r246249 , but it's quite different from this one.

Hello Didier,
Maybe someone will remember the original thread. Anyway - whoever it is, it's definitely not the Shadows of course!

I'm sure I've seen this on Spotify and although it's shown as The Shadows on there it's actually been entered incorrrectly
and the album is called "The Shadows" and the group is called "Dance On"

The album in this quote reminds me of the days some 40 years ago when every hit was covered and sold through Woolworths on the Embassy label. I only ever bought one such cover - the theme from Rawhide, coupled with the theme from Wagon Train as far as I recall - obviously not Shadows tracks. I remember there were covers of Shads hits done this way at the time but never bought or listened to any. Does anyone remember these, have copies and can say how they compared with the genuine article?

Quite a few Shadows tracks were covered on the Embassy label - mostly by Bud Ashton and his group or occasionally Steve Stannard. Jet & Tony's hits were also covered. Certainly these were amongst the tracks put out on Embassy: "Scarlett O'Hara" / "Applejack" / "Diamonds" / "Man Of Mystery" / "Theme For Young Lovers" / "Rhythm 'n' Greens" / "Sleepwalk" / "F.B.I." / "Atlantis" / "Geronimo" / "The Frightened City" / "Apache" / "Wonderful Land" / "Guitar Tango" / "Dance On" / "The Savage" / "Kon - Tiki". Generally speaking they were pretty feeble - with nothing of the power and energy of the Shadows. A few were just plain awful. Overall (IMHO) the drummer/s quite often gave a fair account of themselves and the bass was generally adequate (but could seldom compare to Jet). The rhythm was usually accurate but perfunctory & none of the players could really emulate Hank's style, sound and touch. Occasionally they would get close - but only occasionally. For instrumental collectors they're interesting. A couple of useful collections (on Honky Tonk Records!) are: "Swingin' Guitars" (CDHT602) from 2002 and "Play Man Play" (CDHT604) from 2009. The latter (30 tracks) includes 3 of the former's 26 tracks. But...if you like instrumentals and history (& don't mind some of the covers being a little 'dodgy') then those two CDs are well worth tracking down.

I've got Living Doll on the Embassy label and Hank's great solo is completely different...
