As Martin noted, I had not included the 10-inch Rollercoaster disc but only because monitors of releases of Cliff and Shads/Drifters stuff didn't pick it up. Not an excuse but it will be added later on (and apologies for the unfortunate omission).

On the subject of availability on Amazon, you can order it (it's print on demand rather than picking from stock) from them. I also have a limited stock that I have added to Amazon too.

Thanks Vic,

When I saw this at Shadowmania, I just had to have that book! It's great for dipping into to read up on your favourite titles. As with any large tome of this type, you'll be searching for a particular track and then get distracted by another title that catches your eye - then another, and you forgot what you were originally searching for in the first place...

Regards, Martin.

I'm interested, does the book also feature dates for all of The Shadows' 1970's and 1980's recording sessions, apart from live recordings obviously?

Excellent book. I think it's what they call a "Coffee table book", I put four legs on my copy and that's what I ended up with !

Got mines in the post this morning. It looks full of info and is going to take a long time to read!
I also recieved with it, a newsletter with a report on the recent Shadowmania event and i was shocked to read that Brian Bennett had suffered a mini stroke recently, i hope he's okay and recovers quickly. I was suprised no one on the site had posted this (unless it was and i just missed it).

Arpeggio wrote:It is excellent. Inevitably there are errors & I too am compiling a list to send to Vic Rust (son of the UK doyen of session research - especially Jazz - Brian Rust) - as he requests at the beginning of the book. It is a monumental book & what Vic has done is to build upon all of the years of research & previously published chronologies / session research / histories previously published by: Cliff himself, the Shads themselves, Malcolm Addey, Mike Read, Pete Lewry, Nigel Goodall, Malcolm Campbell, Bruce Welch, Les Woosey, myself & many others. Naturally - this is acknowledged to some degree. However, it can't be denied that Vic has 'synthesised' all of the available information and forged it into a very well informed whole overview. As such - it's first - class. Not only does it include the Shads recordings - but everything they did with Cliff too. As I said - it's going to take quite a while to get through its 572 text - crammed pages!

Rob :D

not to forget Roberto Pistolesis endless quest for "that sound" book.
Although his list comprises only the shadows recordings in chronological order with the gear used, as he thought. (or did you mean that by referencing Malcolm Addey?

Hi Shadowkarl,
Yes....of course Roberto's "That Sound" is also an extremely important reference source. I don't know whether or not Vic Rust has read Roberto's book as it isn't credited in the general introduction to his own book - which is why I only alluded to it.

Bests....Rob

PS: If you enjoy reading about the Shadows & Cliff / Shadows - then I think that Vic's book is definitely an essential addition to any collection.

Has anyone noticed in the book that The Shadows are listed as playing on 4 tracks from the Good News album.

Do we think that is correct?

Presumably you're referring to the four tracks from the April 27, 1967, session: We Shall be Changed, Mary What You Gonna Call That Pretty Little Baby, Get On Board Little Children, and Go Where I Send Thee. The original album sleeve credits those tracks (arranged and conducted) to Mike Leander. And if you listen to them, they're in that brassy, slightly frantic style that Leander often brought to Cliff recordings around that time. There's certainly no trace of the Shadows sound in them.

I suppose it's possible that the Shadows tucked themselves into Leander's band as session men, but I find that hard to imagine. And the original sleeve makes no reference to their participation. My guess is Mr Rust simply picked-up incorrect information from Lewry/Goodall, who do list the Shadows as providing the backing for those tracks.

Thanks for that. I've listened to the tracks but can find no sound of The Shadows. However like most things, someone has mentioned it and it puts that little bit of doubt in your mind. Did they or didn't they? Victor Rust also lists one track on Don't Stop Me Now as featuring The Shadows.
