The Don't Stop Me Now track is presumably You Gotta Tell Me. Hank and Bruce did backing vocals on that, as they also did on Solitary Man which was recorded on the same session.

With such an enormous amount of information to contend with and with so many different sources to consolidate, it's inevitable that errors will creep into a reference work on this monumental scale. When Malcolm Campbell, Les Woosey & myself (perfectionists all!!!!) did our "Pocket Guide...." we initially acted as each other's proof readers. That eliminated some mistakes but we realised that we still needed more assistance. To that end we asked other experts / authorities (viz: Jim Nugent / Stuart Duffy / George Geddes / Alan Taylor / Tony Hoffman / Ulrich Sasu / Ray Steer / Mo Foster etc., etc) to cast an eye over our efforts too. They were eagle - eyed, perceptive and enormously helpful.

Vic Rust makes it quite clear in his introduction that he welcomes comments / submissions about mistakes, errors, omissions etc., etc which he will address / correct in any future edition of the book. It's great that people are reading through very thoroughly and picking up on some of the points already mentioned. I'll certainly be contacting Vic with some (hopefully useful) observations and I know that Martin Page (for example) will be too. The more the merrier....providing it's all done in the right spirit....which i'm sure it will be.

For the tracks Jet Black; Driftin', Apache, Quartermasster's Store he keeps making reference to them being released on the EP "Apache". I never knew there was an EP in the UK called Apache.
Was it a planned but then cancelled release?

No, there wasn't an EP release as such in the UK. It was actually in France. My father has this same EP.

That was a French EP, which I actually bought on a school trip to France in 1962!

No, there wasn't an EP release as such in the UK. It was actually in France. My father has this same EP.

Yes, for some mysterious marketing reasons, singles were not available in France (apart for Jukebox), only 4 tracks EPs were released and available.
So when Apache was released in France, it was on an EP with the addition of "Jet Black" and "Driftin" (studio versions). I still have it :





Make no mistake : the guitar on the front cover wasn't the one used by Hank. EMI France photgrapher was asked to supply a photo of an electric guitar, and he shot the first one he could borrow !

This is exactly the kind of thing ("Apache" EP) that Vic Rust means I'm sure. I don't know how he managed to confuse the French EP (which I too have in my collection) with a British release.....but I do remember myself that this kind of 'blind spot' can occur when dealing with vast amounts of data. For example, Vic also refers constantly to Brian Bennett joining the Shadows in December, 1961. Brian joined in early October, 1961. But.....his first recording session with the Shads was in December, 1961. So....I'm sure that's where that little confusion came from. But.....hey.....Vic's book is a fantastic read and it's crammed with loads of facts, trivia and useful information. I'm still working my way through it. It's a great read. Really.....it's a must have for Shads devotees.
