Hi All

Last year i popped into my local HMV in Huddersfield looking for a top ten CD single, only to be told sorry! we can order one in for you ( could have done that myself from home) it will be here next week, a week! i know Rome was'nt built in a day. I mean a top ten song not in stock at a music shop,it's not as if i was asking for fish and chips. Hence to say as a working DJ HMV have lost my custom and they wonder why the high street shops are all closing down! One rule of business give the customer what they want.

I hope this isn't true! There are a lot of people who haven't the knowledge or ablity to use a computer so they will have to suffer.
It has taken me years to build up my collection of CDs :(

I just don't get this. Audio and video equipment still gets better and better in sound quality, so you expect the audio and video carriers to improve in quality as well. If all music from now on will only be available for download, the sound quality goes downhill. I haven't had experience with FLAC, a 'lossless' variant of compressed audio files, but I just cannot believe that less audio information will result in the same sound quality as the CD standard or the WAVE sound format.
This trend will also mean the end of the artwork accompanying CD's.

The bottom line is all about money for the record companies. They can make shovel loads more when they don't have to make CDs and fancy packing to go with them. Sadly, the taste of the customer comes well down their list of priorities. This is a rumour which is spreading like wildfire in the online community, but my experience at that store certainly left me a bit surprised...and looking like an idiot as I wandered along the banks of DVDs and Blue Rays trying to find some CDs. I don't think CDs will cease totally, but I fear they are going the way of the LP and 45 (not to mention the 78 and cassette tape). Progress.
I read somewhere recently that people aged up to 25/30 rarely buy CDs now and prefer to download their music (mostly for free). It is what they have grown up with and is the only thing they know so they are happy with that. Someone of 19 with an iPod or iPhone is not going to rush out and spend £2000 on top rate Hi-Fi equipment and then spend £1000s on a CD library when they get the music they want for nowt via dodgy download sites.

Must dig my crystal set out of the cupboard.

There is a move afoot to shut down the sales of cd's from the channel islands. But if there are going to be no more cd's it doesn't matter.

Youngsters may prefer to download instead of CDs but there is no sound quality with the bloody noise that they play. You cannot tell the difference whether it's download or CD, just want to shut it off!

Hi All

Many people over the years have spent thousands on collecting all sorts of things, with me it's records,in all forms Lp's, singles and CD's. Which is something you can sit back and recollect on bring back numous memoriesfor the past. Just think 20yrs from now a teenager looking back will be able to say i've got an Hard drive with thousands of original downloads! How interesting will that be! No actual feel of the item, no original artwork and no information on the artists, band menbers or production.

Because of work i do Have to occassionally download the odd song mainly to try and find a radio edit with the explicit lyrics removed. I have to say downloads do seem to lose some quality compared to an original CD.

Rant over but i'am sticking with my collecting!

I've still got my Sony Betamax and boxes of cassette tapes in storage in the garage, but it's not looking too good for them on the comeback front. I was trying to load some of my very early (1980s) CDs on to iTunes recently and the discs are definitely starting to deteriorate. Word of warning for those who may have special CDs or whatever from the 1980s...make a backup copy just in case.

Hi All

some CD's suffer from peeling due to a faulty lacquer, this shows up in the early stage as either a brownish stain or under torch light in the dark as a milky white stain usually on either the outer edge or inner edge of the CD. Finally turning the entire CD brown . Back in the mid 90's i sent back at least 100 CD's to Philips for replacments, some of which had to go back again as they had still not resolved the problem. The CD's in question were all PDO discs made in England the German PDO discs were fine and not affected. The Shadows CD box collection including the Shadows Diamonds PWKS 4018 P, the Shadows Collection PWKS 559 and the Shadows Dancing in the dark PWKS 4031 P had this problem

Never had a problem with any other make of CD's. Just PDO make in England

We have the same 3 CD box "A Special Collection", released in December, 1990. My father bought it new for 29 Dutch Guilders in November or December 1993. All three discs have the browning effect, but they still play without any problems! We also have original editions of The Shadows' very first two CD's ever released: "Compact Shadows" (September 1984) and "Guardian Angel" (November 1984). These are both in good playable condition, despite being 27 years old.
I used to have the 1995 3 CD box "The First 20 Years At The Top - 1959-1979". When the 2004 4 CD box "Complete Singles A's And B's - 1959-1980" came out, I sold the former. I remember reading in a review by Malcolm Campbell, about the 1995 CD's decomposing. I never had such experience with my copy of the CD box. Are there any fans who have experienced this?

I've got the 1995 Shadows 3 CD box set, ive had it for about 8 years and it still plays perfectly.
My first CD i ever bought was the Shadows Everything of Value back in 1994 and that still plays with no problem.
I've never had a CD decompose but my brother did have a PC game on CD that had brown spots on the surface that got bigger and eventually the game stopped working.
