Plenty of connections with the name, James Burton & Hank

So...was James Burton the original Shadows lead guitarist ?

Thanks for that- I knew JB played with Bob Luman early in his career, but I hadn't seen such an early clip of JB before- blimey! Hard to accept he was so good already at only 17!!!

There was also Bobby Vee's backing group called the Shadows in Minnesota in the late '50's- with an occasional piano player who sat in- named Bob Zimmerman (later Bob Dylan) - believe it or not!

And no arguments about Strats versus Teles for me- I love both....

The pick and fingers style used by James Burton has been used for many years by Richard Thompson, and to great effect. James was years ahead of his time back then. Was he using a banjo string for a 1st then I wonder?

It seems likely. The string bending on, for example, Ricky Nelson's 'Believe What You Say'' (one of Hank's early influences) would not have been possible with heavier guages. Hank talks about this in the radio programme It Was In Tune When I Bought it . When Cliff and The Shadows were all poring over the Fender catalogue prior to the purchase of 34346, the Strat's tremolo arm, with its capacity to bend the strings, must have been a factor in the choice since it would have seemed a way that Burton could have done the string bending.
