100 top guitarists

Rolling Stone magazine have just published another meaningless list of the top 100 guitarists of all time.

Why caring for such lists...
For me it has as much credibility as diets for summer that all women's magazines publish every spring...

Hi, Tim. I am really glad you posted this article. Besides the fact that is has unified us about something (the lack of Hank's name being on the list), it has opened up a conversation where we are sharing the names of other talented guitar players. I have learned a lot. For example, dave mentioned the great Australian guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel (and another friend on this list mentioned Tommy to me as well). I have just ordered a couple of Tommy's albums, including his new CD called, "All I Want For Christmas."

While it's a shame that Tommy's name isn't on the Top 100 List, I am happy that his name came up in conversation. If anyone is so inclined, please take a look at this video and hear how beautiful Tommy's guitar music is. Usually I don't take any notice of top 100 etc. lists but a few years ago there was a very comprehensive list called 'Playing The Beatles Backwards The Ultimate Countdown' which included along with comments almost all the Beatles recordings except live versions I think. I couldn't resist looking at it and was quite amazed at how some songs were rated. For instance 'Ask Me Why' which I've always loved was way down the bottom of the list as were other favourites.

It depends so much on who is surveyed or who compiled the lists and even people with very similar musical tastes will disagree on favourites. Music and styles of music will either sound good, bad,neutral or boring to the listener and I can't force myself to like or dislike a piece of music any more than to like or dislike certain foods. I've tried listening to Jimi Hendrix and he doesn't appeal to me at all although I'm sure he must have been immensely talented and even classical musicians like Nigel Kennedy rate him very highly.

I haven't looked at the top guitarists list but for me Hank and Bruce would be right up there at number 1.
