My comment on Hyde Park Doncaster

Postby Detailed Infinity » 07 Dec 2011, 11:23

Rather hastiliy I said the other day that the venue (not the members) of the S Yorks Shad Club left a lot to be desired.

As a resident of Doncaster I'm ashamed of how the town has declined into a desert of pubs, vomit strewn streets at night, two day occupancy of pound shops, heavy drug dealing, many, many night clubs, East European cartels along with very high unemployment and social issues.

So it's with regret I said that the club itself left a lot to be desired principly due to it's run down location. I'll not make racist comments about the area, what is not said speaks louder than saying it.

Sorry for the offence Peter.

It's a sad fact I'm afraid that the same things can be said about almost any town/city in Britain today.

Very true! Seems as shame the Government can spend billions on the Olympics, which I suspect wont make a profit, despite what we are told, and yet we have millions of empty homes' all boarded up crying out for renevation! A great programme on channel 4 last night highlighting the fact!

Until last December I was employed by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council's Environmental Health Dept. Although I was the environmental auditor for Robin Hood Airport and fortunatley 'out of it' my collegues fought a losing battle not only in the town centre but in the immediate areas around. The dormatory suburbs are lovely and are not by and large multi-cultural.

Doncaster was a Roman bridging town, Henry VIII held up the Pilgramage of Grace on it's march to London here at the river Don 'cause yet again the Northern counties were being shafted by the South seemingly as we always have been. Look what the government ofthe 1980's have done to my town. Stripped it of all it's pride and work ethic and left it to rot.

In the spirit of balanced views here's the sanitised version given out by my previous employer. You'll spot some of the stuff featured in the girl's vid particularly where's she says 'it's a dump'. I'm OK, residing 7 miles to the east almost in North Lincs and that's where I'm staying.

I don't want to get overly sentimental, but I think that the way modern day Britain has changed , partly explains why I love the music +films and TV of the fifties and sixties so much. Put them on and escape in a time machine for a while.

My Dad died about 12 years or so ago, not long before he went he said," I shan't be sorry to shuffle off when my time comes, I no longer recognise the world I live in"

I've not reached that point yet, but I'm beginning to understand what he meant, I'm afraid that whilst we continue to glorify so called celebs with nothing to offer except how stupid they are, make programmes which are dumb'd down about as far as they can go making heroes of people who behave like children, and turn a blind eye to the mess and disruption caused by young men and women who go out at weekends with the sole intention of getting blind drunk, the country won't get much better.

I guess this makes me look a grumpy old man and at 65 but still having to work that's probably what I am, but when I was young people used to aspire to a better standard of living and a degree of genteelness, now it seems people aspire to be as course and slobbish as they can.

Oh well rant over! maybe the pendulum will swing back to the days when if a Bobby caught you misbehaving you got a clout round the ear, and if your dad found out you got another.

Well........I'm 67, and glad NOT to be as "grumpy" as you lot!!

Yes - if pressed - I WILL perhaps concede that I felt more comfortable with the world in the 50/60's, and take many opportunities to revel in all manner of nostalgic activities.

However, I still live in the world of today (do I REALLY have any alternative - apart from becoming a grumpy old git?).

Speaking of the REAL world - and perhaps going back "on topic" too - as a (quite infrequent) visitor to the Doncaster Shadows Guitar Club at the Hyde Park WMC, I feel compelled to add that, for me, it's what goes-on INSIDE the Club that matters:
* Friendly, like-minded people:
*Opportunities to PLAY (rather than just "spout" about) the music we love:
*A handful of enthusiasts who are prepared to "make it all happen" - AND raise a significant amount of dosh for a very
deserving charity.
*Well-kept Sam Smith's Bitter at £1.50-ish a pint:
*A perfectly preserved "time capsule" of a Working Men's Club - just like me and "our Kid" played-in "way back when".

Perhaps if we had more people around exhibiting some of the above-mentioned attributes, your perceptions of the World would be a little different.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul

I probably sound grumpier than I really am, but as an example we moved to our town 27 years ago, when our eldest started school a couple of years later, pretty, generally well dressed, polite young mums used to take their children to our school in Mini's Astra's Panda's the odd 316 Beamer etc. some even walked.

25 years on most of the mums taking children to that same school are now over weight, loud and foul mouthed, tattooed, driving bl**dy great 4 X 4s too big for the mainly single track roads we have locally, with the obligatory Staffy in the back of the car.

And when our 17 year old brings her friends home they're surprised to find she has a mum and dad who are a) married and b) still living together.

I'm not one of those who think the 50's and 60's were much better times but I do feel there is a lot about today's world which is ugly and unpleasant.

But we're getting off topic and I've never been to Doncaster so what do I know

Yes you're right Paul & Peter. It's the folks inside on the day and I should keep my mouth shut.
