Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround on a CDR

I know that quite a few guys here use Dolby Audtition for music creation which also has a facility for producing .AC3 format files (Dolby Surround Sound). I don't know how many actually produce 5.1 surround files but here's some lead into doing so particularly in Adobe. I use the 5.1 AC3 system inherent in Sony Acid and Sony Vegas for visual stuff because I prefer the format however you may want to try in Adobe.

Obviously you need a surround sound system for playback. I've a lovely Altec Lansing remote control system for 5 channel PC output practicaly brand new if anyone's interested.

I put a mix up using surround and nobody said a word so I didn't bother again.
It's still a bit uncommon.

I don't have a 5.1 sound system with my PC. Only a "no name" 2.1 speaker system, and Sennheiser PX100 headphones. But I have a 5.1 audio system (Dolby Digital and DTS) with my audio/video setup (in another room) with KEF speakers, which I use for DVD and Blu Ray discs.

D/load this link and shove it in your surround player. It won't play as a .wav file it is rendered and encoded .ac3 surround. 16 tracks in all with each track assigned a different spatial position. You can see from the screen shot I've place track 5 to the rear left speaker. All done in Acid--I do find the GUI more clear to work in than Adobe. This piece was done as a short product promo.

Hi can highly encourage the use of Acid as Brian mentions. (The program, not the hallucinogenic)
I've used Acid since the 2004 version for my initial audio mixes for video. The interface is superb. As with Ecca, I also did a 5.1 surround mix recently of a variety/cabaret show, nobody noticed!!

As Lee has said, all Sony's family of three programes (Sound Forge, Acid Pro and Vegas) have much better GUI (pronounced GOO-ee a program interface that takes advantage of the computer's graphics capabilities to make the program easier to use). The work is much clearer when building up tracks. Of course there's alaways a downside to everything and in Sony's case is that the editor (Sound Forge) costs a lot and is a seperate application unlike Adobe Audition.

Also Vegas (the video mixer) again is a seperate application and is also very expensive as is Acid which is the mixing software. So musico's have to buy all three seperatley and that's a lot of money.
