Slightly off topic, but actually only slightly...

I've just had a rummage in my box of vinyl and had a very pleasant few days listening to some old LPs. Just in case anyone's interested:

Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood
Phantom Blue - Phantom Blue
Whitesnake - 1987
Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Guns 'N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Cliff Richard - Now You See Me...Now You Don't
Brian Bennett - Rock Dreams
The Shadows - Change of Address

Phew! I think that's about it.

What I have noticed is that if said LP is kept in very good to mint condition, I honestly believe that vinyl sounds better than CD. I have played the same albums on both format and I really do prefer the sound of vinyl -- yes, it IS warmer!!! OK, the odd scratch here and there doesn't improve the listening experience, but, overall, give me vinyl any day!

I fully expect to have another 'rummage' later on! Maybe The Hank Marvin Guitar Syndicate? Or perhaps Tasty? Or even The Illustrated London Noise?
I know, I really am spoilt for choice!

Right, I'm off to HMV to buy a CD (before they become extinct too!!!!) Not that I shall enjoy listening to it, of course!!

Any thoughts anyone?

As someone said on a similar post a few week's ago, there is no danger of vinyl taking over fron CD's. It's true there is a big surge in vinyl sales for 2011, the highest sales since 1991, but total units sold in UK last year was only in the region of 400,000 units of vinyl. Compare this with CD's. If you take one artist, Adel her CD album 21 sold 5.8 million units. Her CD album Rolling in the Deep has I believe has already sold over 5million units and this is just the one artist in a year. There is no danger that CD's will become extinct.
I myself am a 99.9% vinyl man and dont intend to change even though the average price of a new LP is £16.30p and a CD is £7.82.
Keep your LP's clean and stored correctly and you can enjoy them for many, many years.

Indeed, Geoff.

The first pop/rock LP I ever bought (actually, mum bought it for me!) was The Shadows 20 Golden Greats, way back in 1977. 35 YEARS AGO!!! It's a bit crackly now and one or two tracks jump, but it still means more to me than just about any record I own. And the first single I ever bought was Love DeLuxe. Come to think of it, mum bought me that too!! It is a bit sad how today's youth seem to place no importance on actually owning music on a physical format, but prefer to download a string of 0s and 1s off the internet. I say it's sad, 'cos buying records was an experience in itself and there are so many memories (good and bad) associated with them -- not just the songs, but the record sleeves, etc... God, I sound like a sad old git don't I?

I have heard that the CD is now living on borrowed time and that there may be no new ones pressed after another 18 months. Hopefully this is not true as they are the last bastion of traditional physical music sales. By the way, the 12" double groove singles of Cavatina and Argentina sound amazing, especially Bermuda Triangle on the B side.

Good to know that there is more than just myself who still thinks this way and places some genuine importance on these old slabs of vinyl.

First vinyl? 54 years ago, when the paper round + some pocket money bought me the Rebel Rouser EP (Rebel Rouser/Stalkin/Ramrod/The Walker) on London American , with Duane's name on the front cover spelt as Douane, like a French customs post! It took two 15 mile round trips on the bike to get it - the first to see it in the record shop in Potters Bar, the second to go back with the money . . . . .

And that's what I mean, things were just so much more fun in the old days! No wonder so many of today's kids are fat -- you don't do much excercise sitting at a computer!!! I wonder how many people will remember their first download with such clarity and affection?!!!

Yes you can admire a classic EP or LP album cover much as you would do with a fine oil painting . Downloads cant really be admired in the same fashion!!! Anyone ever seen the episode where the Lone Ranger meets Lassie one of the young laddies has a bike which is groaning under his weight nothing changes with burgers!!!!

Must have been in 1957, I still have it.

I stil have lots of early 60s vinyl but I find there is a snag! They wont fit into my cars music system!
