You can pre-order the CD from Amazon - due for release in April. I may buy it as one of the tracks on my original copy doesn't play properly.

On the topic of Cliff Live in Japan, the Marvin and Farrar set is superb - some of the best ever live material from The Shadows etc. Keep the Customer Satisfied is particularly good: I used to play in a band called The Projectors in the early '90s and we used to end our set with this song - copying the Marvin + Farrar arrangement as closely as we could! It always went down a storm!!

Dear Ulrich: Thank you for the photo of the Japan concert and for the information. Seeing Alan Tarney and Trevor Spencer in there really put a smile on my face. :D
Thanks again.

UlrichS wrote:Hi all,
the Cliff Goes East 2LP set was not the original release. The set was first issued in Japan as CLIFF "LIVE" IN JAPAN '72 (EOP-93077B), recorded on 22nd and 23rd September, 1972.

On the back of the sleeve the sides A, B and C are credited to Cliff Richard, side D is credited to MARVIN & FARRAR "LIVE" IN JAPAN '72. On the sleeve only JOHN FARRAR/HANK MARVIN (Guitar) BRIAN BENNETT (drums) PAT CAROL/OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN (Back chorus) are listed.

However, a stage photo (see below) give some more information (left to right): Hank Marvin - John Farrar - (Cliff) - Brian Bennett - Trevor Spencer (?) - Alan Tarney - Olivia Newton-John - Pat Carroll - Alan Hawkshaw. This is certainly the backing for the Cliff part of the concerts.

On the labels of the records the are the following details:
Side A, B and C: Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John (Back Chorus), Pat Carol (Back chorus), Hank Marvin (Lead Guitar), John Farrar (Bass Guitar), Brian Bennett (Drums)
Side D: Hank Marvin (Lead Guitar), John Farrar (Bass Guitar), Brian Bennett (Drums)

Much more interesting is that the Marvin & Farrar set includes two more songs on the Japanese release which are omitted on all the other releases: Something and Keep The Customer Satisfied. To my knowledge these two tracks can only be found apart from the above vinyl release on the Italian Fremus CD DAKOTA (1994, CDFR 0520).

Best wishes,

Ulrich

From one of the 1972 or 1973 issues of Dynamite International, I learned the line-ups of the two acts featured during the September 1972 concerts and thus on the double album are as follows:

The Cliff Richard set:
Cliff Richard - Vocals

The Brian Bennett Band:
Brian Bennett - Drums & Leader
Hank Marvin - Lead Guitar
John Farrar - Rhythm/Lead Guitar
Alan Tarney - Bass Guitar
Trevor Spencer - Percussion
Olivia Newton-John - Backing Vocals
Pat Carroll - Backing Vocals

The Marvin & Farrar set:
Hank Marvin - Lead Guitar & Vocals
John Farrar - Rhythm/Lead Guitar & Vocals
Alan Tarney - Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals
Trevor Spencer - Drums

If I remember correctly, the "Cliff 'Live' In Japan '72" double album also features a black and white booklet with pictures of the performances, with one or two of Marvin & Farrar's performance. It shows Trevor Spencer behind the drums, not Brian Bennett as is claimed on the back of the sleeve.

During the shows there also was a 20-minute solo-spot for Olivia Newton-John. My guess is The Brian Bennett Band took care of the backing. Does anyone know for sure? Also, is there any information available of which track was recorded on which of the two dates listed?

Back on topic, I wonder whether the new CD issue of "Change Of Address" will be compiled from the original master tapes, from the 1992 Polydor CD issue or worse, directly lifted from an original 1980 vinyl copy.

Disappointed to see that the new CD issue of 'Change of Address' doesn't contain any bonus tracks. I would have thought that 'Fender Bender' (the b-side of Equinox Part V) would have been an obvious inclusion. I have the 1992 CD release (got it last year from a charity shop!) and I am hoping that the new CD will have a proper booklet as opposed to the single inlay card with minimal info that came with the '92 CD. I will probably buy it anyway, but a shame they couldn't have made a bit more of an effort as bonus tracks are more or less obligatory these days.

Interesting.
I don't think I'll bother buying a re-relase copy though, I still have my 1992 Polydor UK CD release (813 574-2)and the September 1980 Roll Over Records vinyl release of 'Change of Address', it still plays OK.

I saw this show in Edinburgh and interviewed Brian and Cliff backstage afterwards. I also saw, at close quarters, Alan Tarney and Olivia Newton-John.
As I remember the show itself, Brian took care of all the backing including the ONJ set. And Keep The Customer Satisfied is my standout memory of the whole gig. Excellent!

Ivo,

From the German Cliff & Shadows club mag I have the same line-ups as you with the addition of Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards for all sets.

ONJ was backed by the Brian Bennett Band.

The picture you are referring to should be this one which clearly shows Alan Tarney on bass guitar and Trevor Spencer on drums, but I don't know whether it was taken at one of the concerts in Japan. (Sorry about the size but this leaves the details visible.)

That's a fantastic picture. Nice to see it confirmed that Alan Tarney also sang on stage, not just played the bass.
