Hi Andy,

I too quit following the trend in 64 or even earlier, and stopped playing completely in 1970 to pick it up again in 2000. 30 years later.
I came to like Surf music and the beat and groove of the Venture since.
Nokie and the Ventures were just curious to hear a Shadows version of Apache at the NAMM, and Dick Dale was already a friend, so you
see it's not my playing that attracted them.

I have never shown this before, but this is what Dick Dale had to say one day at the Hard Rock Cafe in NewPort Beach while I was attending the show:

He was a little excited a went way overboard, but I had no control.

Surf Music

You're very modest, Abel. I can't open the file on this (Mac) machine, so I will try later on another computer. I am trying to play Dick Dale's Misirlou. Are you using strings as thick as his?

Photos and an Atlantis cover

Postby abstamaria » 03 Feb 2012, 15:26

Here is a video posted by Pinoy Classic Rock as part of their 10th anniversary celebration. I suppose the sound wasn’t too bad, as this was in a crowded bar with Marshall amps that everyone used.

It was a treat to have been invited to play, as there were really good musicians that were part of the reunion. Anna (bass), Roy (rhythm), Armand (drums), and Oscar (keyboard) borrowed their instruments from the other musicians and played very well, but you must excuse my poor playing. I fit in the PCR list only because of age! Anyway, this was our take that evening on hit "Atlantis."

You can just hear my bass on these recordings. I hope it wasn't too bad. I do try to get the original notes and feel.

Ciao to all!

Hi Andy, Anna,

Not only you all play well, but the sound is unusually good for a live and large venue like yours.
The Shadows music is well represented in Manila. Bravo.
What guitar are you playing Andy, it look like a Squier, but I am not sure.
I sent you a message, Please let me know when you are done. Thank you.

Superb performances,
Abel

Hi Andy and Anna,

The sound and playing is quite good. Just too bad it's not full live video !

Thank you, Abel, Didier.

Abel, I was using a Fender '62 reissue. I was surprised by the sound too, as the only "Shadows" gear were the guitar and the echo machine, and it was a full bar with many people. I wish the recorder had picked up more of the drums , but it might not have been mic'd.

My best,

Andy

The Electromaniacs was probably one of the top five guitar bands in Manila in the early 1960s. They played Shadows pieces and also their own compositions, some covers of which have appeared on this forum's sound files. The lead guitarist was Ernie Delgado, shown here with his signature cherry red Gibson SG (called “Les Paul” then, as it still had the Les Paul tag on the headstock) with the unusual side-to-side tremolo bar.

Their drummer Lito Toribio was regarded as the best drummer then and well-known for his “Little B” cover. Unfortunately, when guitar bands gave way to the Beatles and the following British Invasion, the band also fell out of favor.

The amplifiers were all locally made.

We are using the Madeleine Cookie Company's Facebook page to try to maintain interest in the Shadows (and the Ventures) music in Manila. We've put in information on Shadows guitars, etc., of course drawn principally from ShadowMusic. Log in if you have a Facebook account -
