Most professionally run concerts these days have a multitrack recording from the sound desk simply as a check on the nights performance and in case there are any later queries.The cost is negligable, especially in the case of digital desks, which just need a hard disk drive attached.

A video recording comes at a much, much greater cost. Not only because of the extra staff and equipment needed, but also the changes to the lighting and often to the staging (to allow the cameras to get the necessary shots). Then the concert promoter has to be recompensed for all the seats that are lost because of the space needed for safe operation of big camera cranes and there needs to be a camera tracking runway (flat and clear of cables) in front of the stage. For city locations, parking arrangements have to be made to keep the road outside clear for the video vehicles and risk assessments made for cables to be 'sky'ed' over the pavement. The list goes on . . . . .

So I would expect the CD mix of a live event like Reunited to be different from the DVD version. It would be a new mix, done from the master files.

Making a new mix also has a cost, I guess that if a CD was to be issued, the existing one made for the DVD would be used.

despite the poor quality recording .

It brings back very happy memories but when I think of that wonderful sound of Brian's drums especially at 1:36 I can't imagine even a professional recording being able to do that justice so I re-live it in my head instead. However I've bought three copies of the official DVD (one I gave to my Mum) and think they're excellent quality and very like the concert here.

Although I know little of such things, I can't imagine that it costs as much now to make a live recording (or is anywhere near as complicated a process) as it would have been even in the 1980s. The sound/mixing equipment is so sophisticated now, and with everything done on computer, surely it must be a relatively simple task to take a hard-drive recording, or whatever, straight from the desk. The expense would be incurred at the editing/pressing stage.

I can't really see the point in simply releasing onto CD the DVD soundtrack. I suspect that it would not sell that well -- look at the Live CD from the Shadows 2004 Final Tour, I don't think it did at all well, whilst the DVD sold in shed loads!!! At the very least I would go for the BBC recorded concert, or one of the shows from South Africa (if they were recorded) as they varied the set slightly by adding 40 Days.

I'd buy a copy, so that's one definite sale at least!

I would be surprised if there weren't video recordings stored away somewhere from every single one of the concerts. The cameras were there to provide feeds to the video wall at the back of the set, and HDD storage costs would have been negligible in comparison to the revenue from these shows.

Not sure the framing used to fill the screens above the stage would be suitable to make a DVD, and not sure that it was recorded.
I don't want to look pessimistic, but who would spend anything to produce a new video when there is already a DVD available, and when there is no one to produce a Blu Ray version of the DVD, although everything was filmed in HD ?...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am sure that some of the shots we see up on the big screen are also used in the DVD. Mainly close-ups I think. I think it's a fair assumption to make that there will be some form of video footage from most if not all concerts, but I suspect that the only one really suitable for release on DVD will have been the O2 gig, due to the fact that more cameras (especially the crane) will have been used.

From Malaga departure lounge - very often, a recording done from the audience by someone sitting in that lucky spot where the front of house sound is good, is far more pleasing to my ears than a clinical recording made from the mixing desk. Most of mine sound pretty good!
