Harmonisers are really good however you have to consider the scenario in which they're going to be used especially given the price. To get your money back you need to be gigging as a semi pro or even a fulltime artiste. That's the market they're aimed at.

Great tools for a soloist making tracks in the studio or even adding a third or fifth harmony in a live performance, but I prefer the real thing which of course I enjoy because of four other band members who can sing quite well. I do benefit from it occasionally though.

On the down side, if the harmonies don't 'trigger' correctly (because your chord fingering has to be perfect), it can sound horrendous. As for pitch correction - always remember that old saying 'you can't polish a turd'.

No you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter!

I can't disagree with your logic Brian. However, fortunately for a couple of guitar emporiums, I didn't apply it to the purchase of several guitars
over the last few years.

I bought my CS Strat because I liked, the look of it, the feel of it and the sound of it.
I applied the same logic to my 50th anniversary Strat and to my recent purchase
of a Gibson acoustic.

So, in terms of money:

Have any of the above paid for themselves? No.

Are they likely to? No

Have they given me sufficient pleasure to say they were worth the purchase? Most certainly. 8-)

The same logic will apply to a harmonizer / anything else I can convince my beautiful young Wife
that I can't possibly do without. :D

Cheers, Alan.

Dave,

Re the comment on the item that you can't polish, 'from information received' I believe that an item once existed on a certain (now de-commissioned) Royal Yacht that was said to have been 'captured' from the ship's sytem by scoundrel posing as crew which was said to have been 'issued ' by a certain younger member of a family that spent some time on that yacht. The item was painted with shellac, mounted on a wooden display board (with polished brass supports) and shown to 'selected visitors' on certain occaisions, polished with 'Mr Sheen' I believe, I really can't be too precise on the details for 'obvious' reasons. Hence. I dispute your claim

What I meant to write was I recently bought a Digitech Vocalist 4, however have yet to 'try it out'. The main reason I bought it was that a lot of backing tracks that require harmony are not available with them, so I saw this as a way to add the 'missing bits' in the one man show scenario. In any case, if EBay is any guide they appear to hold their value reasonably well on resale, so if i do sell it on then I won't have lost much money wise (he says hopefully)!

Yes Alan I agree. All of us buy stuff which are being used way below their payload. I have software here unopened from last year 'cause I might need it sometime !!!

Take Camtasia for instance, I bought it because I want to do Powerpoint presentations/YouTube tuts etc. I'll get round to it sometime ;)
