Jet Harris.... Nearly One Year On

Postby Arpeggio » 11 Mar 2012, 13:52

Tempus fugit.....Can it really be nearly one year (March 18th 2011) since the sad news began to filter through that Jet had lost his final battle with cancer? The first anniversary of his passing is almost upon us. But....thanks to ShadowMusic and bands of devoted fans (Jet Harris Memorial Fund, Jet Harris MBE Appreciation Society and more....) his memory and music are both still very much alive. Next month sees the dedication of a Heritage Society Blue Plaque in his honour (details already posted). Fans nationwide and internationally play his records and live bands / guitarists worldwide play his music. Many have already put their talents to great use to stage events and raise money for Cancer Research in his honour / memory. Jet is still in our minds. Jet is still in our thoughts. Jet is still in our hearts. Truly, the music lives on. God bless you Jet.

My apologies folks. Jet has been in my thoughts a lot recently (as I'm sure is the case with many of us). As I sat here thinking with an open diary (....for next week!!!) in front of me.....I somehow convinced myself that today was indeed March 18th.

Daniel Joseph Anthony "Tony" Meehan (2 March 1943 – 28 November 2005)

It is a bit past March 2nd, but I just wanted to say that I hope Tony Meehan and Jet Harris are together once again. I see from this video from Shadowmania 2010 that Tony was still in Jet's thoughts at that time, even while he (Jet) may have been ill.

Now we grieve both Jet and Tony, as well as several other special people whom we have lost.

After years of being in this business and listening thousands of times to all The Shadows stuff, I have to say that the magic for me was indeed the Hank,Bruce , Jet and Tony line up - it was the youth and energy that hooked me and turned my head with those early tracks, along with the early Cliff stuff too. After Wonderful Land there were one or two gems, but it went down hill for me not too long after that. I have been playing, singing and recording some of the old stuff for my own pleasure and realise all too well just how good Jet and Tony were. 8-)

Dave's comments above seconded, the sound certainly changed after Jet and Tony left.

Jet's driving bass was a big part of that sound...

Wouldn't it be fairer to Brian Bennett, Brian Locking, and the late great John Rostill to say that the sound was different and not better or worse with the original line up.?
