True Captain Haddock! The sound developed and tastes changed as time went on and whatever the line up they were very popular and successful.

I think the feeling is that the group as a whole subsequently lost the bite and attack, associated with the initial energy and dynamism of their youth, evolving into a "softer", perhaps more mature, approach to their playing. It's purely a matter of personal preference but, for me, the best period was 1960-62 in terms of the excitement generated by their recorded sound, which is not in any way intended as a criticism of the undisputed musicianship of Licorice and John.
