Presumably, Cliff is still the actual owner of Strat #34346, not to mention the Gibson J200 used by Bruce to such great effect for recording. What was the serial number of that instrument, I wonder?

While trying to trace the elusive Farrar Telecaster, mentioned in another thread, I unearthed an interview with Guitar magazine in the 70s where Hank said Bruce *bought* the Strat from Cliff; other sources say it was a 'thank you' for record production successes...

As I've said before, while they were great players, as far as gear goes, for years early on, they were spoilt brats!

They got most of the gear given to them....initially lent from Cliff (who paid for the first Strat and the J200) then full sets of matching red guitars and basses and Vox amps, supplied by Jennings (presumably free? Or some discount deal? Evidently they periodically gave them back and got new gear supplied as it came out..)

And what about all the Burns prototypes and later Baldwin models which they changed regularly? Did dear old fellow Geordie Jim Burns also give 'em freebies??

Anyone know the full story?

Information flows here - really great.

Another point - all this "image" stuff with nice shiny guitars - anyone recall the video (DVD) "The Shadows Live" I think it was called - half a dozen numbers extracted from a Cliff and Shadows Concert.
The strat Hank used was with chrome fittings and was badly damaged on the underside as the camera panning down and below revealed..

All the best

I'm fairly sure that that was the guitar (a 1958 Strat in FR) that Hank bought from Patrice Bastien's shop in Paris. It was in use from 1981/1982 onward, at least up until 1986, when Hank was given a new reissue Strat (red with gold fitments) by Fender.

Patrice met Hank a few years ago, and Hank said that he still had this 1958 Strat he bought from him in december 1980.

BTW, Hank didn't visit Patrice's shop, he didn't have enough time for that, so Patrice was asked to come to Hank's hotel at breakfast time with suitable guitars (Hotel Concorde Lafayette, west of Paris, just next to the "Palais des Congrès", where Cliff & the Shads performed on november 7th 2009 during the "Final Reunion Tour").

Patrice came with two Strats, the 1958 one and a 1960/61 one. Hank immediatly selected the 1958 one. Brian Goode then came in to discuss the deal. Patrice asked for 15,000 FF, and after some discussion the deal was made for 14,000 FF. They only shake hands, no papers were signed, Patrice later received the corresponding cheque from Polydor...
Patrice also brought his own 1964 Strat, not to be sold, but to be signed by Hank !

Interesting stuff, Didier.

As far as the supply of all the new equipment was concerned, I would have thought that in terms of the free advertising and promotion it afforded, any payment was likely to be minimal.
