Any Legal Experts Out There? Sale of Goods act

Forgive this enquiry as it is not strictly music related, although relevant to accessing this site.

We bought a space saver desk top from a well known computer supermarket but after only 15 months the motherboard failed making it too costly to repair. After only 15 months of normal domestic use it was, in my reasonable opinion, not fit for purpose.

The unit which failed (keyboard, monitor etc are fine) cost £370 but the shop have offered us a paltry £250 - to find a replacement will cost £280 not even the same spec. I would be prepared to accept £280 to replace the unit. Most of the PCs on sale have to be bought as a complete package (£500+) so the choice of tower alone is very limited.

My last conversation with the 'Customer Services' where I politely stated that their offer was not reasonable was met with a very discourteous response of this is our only offer, take it or leave it!

Any advice on what should be done next would be gratefully accepted.

15 months doesn't sound "fit for purpose" even in these times. I'd nip along to the Citizen's Advice Bureau as a first step.

Effective from 1st January 2002, the EU Directive to extend warranty on consumer products from 1- to 2- years, came into effect. This directive only impacts EU member state countries and will be phased in as the EU member states implement the directive. As of 1st January 2002 the following EU member states have implemented this EU Directive: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany The Netherlands, Norway, Italy and Sweden.

It doesn't seems thas this EU directive has been implemented in the UK.

Hi Terry
Contacting CAB is a good way to go. You may also like to try this, as it is the motherboard that has failed, would it be an idea to contact the manufacturer of the motherboard and tell them what has happened and how you would have expected a longer life from their product. Also tell them what treatment you have had from where you bought it and that you are not at all happy with their offer. Tell them you would appreciate their opinion before you take it any further. Most reputable companies don't like the thought of any adverse publicity about their products.

sometimes the manufacturer give a longer warranty on there goods, than the shop do.

There are 2 and 3 years warranty on most motherboards. So I agree with Rob. I have been very sucessfull, when I have written direct to the manufacturer.
They have been very obliging. So try it

I shall be contacting the CAB and I think the idea of contacting the manufacturer is a good one. the only problem I have at the moment is that the shop's offer is set for 10 days (now about 6 remaining) so I need to take action asap.
