7. January 1960 Thursday
(Day 460 in The Shadows history since 5.10.1958/Week 66)
The Shadows: Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris, Tony Meehan

The Shadows with Cliff Richard in Pantomime <Babes In The Wood> at the Globe/ABC in Stockton (24.12.1959 - 09.01.1960)
NME article 15. January 1960 attachment

Two members of UK instrumental group the Shadows-Hank Marvin and Jet Harris were involved in a automobile crash.
Both suffered some minor injuries bur were able to go off on tour later in the Week (NME Rock Day by Day)

While they were in Stockton a hitch developed when Jet crashed the car late one night, fracturing his shoulder which temporally put hat the out of action. Jet’s wife Carol was hurt and Hank was injured too, appearing on stage with one of his lenses blacked out and a plaster over his left eyebrow. Fortunately Jet and Hank healed up sufficiently for the tour to go ahead. Stots pg74

Hello, Heinz,

Though I don't recall that story from the time (early 1960, pre-Apache), I certainly recall reading about it in Jet's own life story, as told to a UK Sunday newspaper (probably the News Of The World) in about 1965.

He described the accident and went on to explain that the treatment of his injuries (bandages, dressings) meant that he could not don his stage clothes and couldn't appear directly on stage. But he still did the Cliff/Shadows theatre appearances, playing from behind the curtain and with only Hank, Bruce and Tony in view of the audience. At the end of one such show, Cliff called for the rear curtain to be lifted and for the audience to give a round of applause to Jet, whom he described as "a tryer".

It's funny the things that can come to mind, 47 years later...

Hi Jim thanks
...another NME cut found:
Another passenger in the car, road manager Mike Conlin, escaped unhurt.
Neither Jet or Hank has missed an appearance with Cliff, although Jet in particular has continued only with difficulty and in great pain.

Re: The Shadows Story (my selected pieces)

Jet revealed the location as we chatted in a Chelsea coffee bar last Friday just before he made his solo TV debut in “Spot The Tune” from the nearby Granada studio.
In the show he played his new record “Main Title Theme.” It was the day of the disc’s release. This week it leaps into the chart in No. 23 slot (NME article)

Rhythm And Greens

FILM FOR SHADOWS

NME 6.3.1964

The Shadows will make a 30-minute colour film during their Yarmouth summer season.
During their Yarmouth run at Yarmouth ABC, the Shadows will film a 30-minute colour “of-beat comedy” titled “Time On Our Sands,” for screening later in the year.
It will feature mainly exterior scenes shot at Yarmouth. Some studio sequences may be filmed at Elstree. As well as playing several numbers, the boys will have acting rôles.
The movie was originally due to be made during last year’s summer season at Blackpool, but had to be postponed owing to bad weather and Bruce Welch’s ill-health.

I saw that show (a musical quiz game in which contestants had to guess the titles of tunes and songs). There was always a short guest spot, and Jet (of course) mimed to Main Title Theme.

It's nearly 50 years ago...

I was still living in the UK in 1962, and I also saw that show- which I recall was hosted by the singer, Marion Ryan (mother of Paul & Barry Ryan)

First time I'd seen a Fender Bass VI, but Jet mimed, as you say Jim..
