Senior Moment Or What-----HELP ! ! !

Postby OLDEREK » 28 Oct 2009, 15:09

Maybe you know where I'm coming from, last night at the Berks Club I played my first two tunes early evening, but when I got half way through my third tune much later in the evening, I went completly blank ! I never had a clue what came next. :D .......What can I put that down to ? A Senior moment / too late at night / loosing the plot / going of my rocker ? .........Have you been there........If so tell us about it, so I'm not on my own ..............

Used to happen to me sometimes nearing the end of a long gig. I'd be coming up to the solo and totally forget where or how to start it :? One of the guys in the band told me he read somewhere that if that happens, just let your fingers go where they want to(as in muscle memory) and you almost always get the solo in your head again. Surprised as I was, it really worked 8-)
Can save a lot of embarrassemt especially if there are other guitarists watching your every move

I was rehearsing Man of Mystery with the band last year and was suddenly flummoxed as to what to play in the first middle eight. I must have played the number hundreds of times before with no problem. I said that I'd had a 'mental block' and since that day my nickname in the band has been 'Mental"!

I get that almost every tune, even playing alone, so not nerves in my case, more a senior moment and mind wandering else where. Think I had same prob at school!

Those at the Cheshire Club last time may remember my disasterous Dance On with our Live Band!!
A tune that I've played (too?) many times and usually get spot on.
This time?? I got to the middle 8 first time round and - er - de nada, rein, zero!!! I couldnt remember how it went. A complete blank!!
And worse - as you get towards the point, you KNOW that you don't know! Like the black hole of a tunnel it comes rushing towards you and the Panic sets in.
Some may say that silence for 8 bars when I'm up playing is a Bonus but heck - how embarrasing!!!
Still - nobody died. :D
cheers
Ian

If it happens again, just play anything and say it's the Les Dawson version!

I was thinking of Eric Morcombe . . . He got away with it for years!!!!

Did he actually mean to do it, or . . . . .

I can do it, and I have no audience, I'm not on telly. but hey, I'm enjoying my own personal version of tunes. So my version of Apache, has 40 more notes than the original, or even 20 less !!!!

Hi Derek It happens to us all
I was playing nivram On Sunday With The mid anglia Shadows Club band
i remember thinking ,when it comes to solo, shall i play Jets Version Or Alan Jones version
Both of which i know And Have played Before.
2 bars into the solo my mind went blank, i couldnt remember either solo, so i just made something up and bluffed it.
but afterwards i was annoyed with myself for not getting it.
when i got home i sat down and played it all the way through no problem?
Strange ?
