Typos, Mis - titles etc

Postby Arpeggio » 10 May 2012, 09:00

I smiled to myself :) when I read some of Donna's comments re her recent "Theme For Young Lovers" thread. Yes.....a 'new' Shadows track: "The Rice And Fall Of Flingel Bunt"! Brilliant. This kind of thing just appeals to my silly sense of humour. There have been many examples of mis - spelt Shadows titles down the years. I'm not sitting here with any kind of reference book or piles of CDs in front of me.....but (knowing the VAST amount of knowledge on this site) just thought that I would kick off this thread / topic, purely for a bit of light - hearted fun. For starters, I would suggest that the most commonly mis - spelt Shadows title is "Quatermasster's Stores". It is quite often listed as "Quartermaster's Stores". It's not really so surprising as the Shadows instrumental is purely an arrangement of the very well - known song of that latter title! An old British army song....it exists in many variants (those versions sung at rugby clubs etc being simply filthy and scatalogical). The 'cleaned up lyrics' version is still sung regularly in 2012 in primary schools and at (Boy) Scouts and (Girl) Guide gatherings world wide. Not surprising that many (especially abroad) compilers would be unaware of the Shadows' liking for daft puns and supplanting Quartemaster with Quatermass -ter (after the cult 1950s sci - fi BBC TV series of which they were all great fans). Thus many foreign compilers simply thought that "Quatermasster" was a spelling mistake! You've got to love it. So, Shadowmusic guys and gals. Together we could come up with the ultimate list of mis - spelt Shadows' titles by pooling our combined knowledge. I'll start the ball rolling. I was on holiday in Thailand about 5 years ago and I picked up a neat CD "The Shadows #1 EMI Thailand PM1291.

"Cavatina (Theme For Deer Hunger)" / "Thunderbird Theme" / "Parisiene Walkaway" (+ 22 correctly spelt titles)

I have seen "Man Of Mystery" listed as "Man Of Mistery" ( a bit foggy that one!) and "Theme From A Filleted Plaice" (bit 'fishy').

Those are just a handful off the 'top of my head'. There must be lots more.

He! He! Love it Jim. Honk Marvin - yes, it has a certain...'Je ne sais quoi' about it. I was really thinking about song titles of course and not mis - spellings of the group's names. I've mentioned in other threads the famous (or infamous) BBC Radio contract listing Jet Harris, Hank Karvin, Bruce Welsh and Tony Meacham. Quite a line -up eh? To get back on track - there was one compilation where I supplied details of composer credits as well as titles. For "Dance On!" I'd listed V & E Murtagh, Adams. Somehow - whoever did the layouts managed to mix in part of the composers' names / initials with the title and came up with: "Dance On Me!". I wasn't given the chance to proof read the finished printed notes first! To be scrupulously honest - that was part of a project about Bristol group the Eagles - who'd recorded their own cover version of the Shads hit.

How about "Scotch On The Rocks" and "Mary Jane"? I think these spellings were used on the 1988 Australian CD "The Shadows Favourites".

Quick survey on my CD shelf:

[I'll overlook missing question marks in titles which are obviously questions, such as Don't It Make You Feel Good?. Likewise missing definite articles in titles such as The Girl From Ipanema. And even missing quote marks on titles which really should include them, such as Theme from "The Boys". I'll even overlook misspelling of Walk - Don't Run! because they are so common on recordings by a variety of artistes.]

(a) Quartermaster's Stores on the Magic CD (France) of "Somethin' Else!"
(b) Quartermaster's Stores [surprisingly!] on the first CD of the 6 CD EMI UK set "The Early Years"
(c) Oh What A Lovely Tune [just as surprisingly] on the third CD of the same EMI set
(d) Dance On [omits the exclamation mark] on the fourth CD of the same set
(e) Dance On [omits the exclamation mark] on the EMI CD "A's B's & EP's" [sic]
(f) Rockin' With Curley Leads on the MfP/CfP CD "Listen To The Shadows" (1989)
(g) Ditto on the same CD re-released (with different art-work on the EMI Sovereign label in 1997
(h) Dance On [omits the exclamation mark] on the MfP CD "The Shadows in The 60's" [sic] (I won't mark any more of this error - but this isn't the last time it occurs)
(i) Quartermaster's Stores [surprisingly!] on the same MfP CD (I won't mark any more of this error either - but this isn't the last time it occurs)
(j) Main Theme from Rhythm And Greens on the EMI/MfP/Trio CDx3 The Shadows Collection" (1996) - the track is actually Rhythm And Greens
(k) Grandfather's Clock on the See For Miles CD "The EP Collection"
(l) Mary Jane (for Mary Anne) on the EMI/Axis Australia CD "The Shadows Favourites" [itself: sic]
(m) Theme Form 'The Deer Hunter' - Cavatina on the EMI Australia CD "Blue Star Shadows"
(n) South Of The Border (Down Mexico Way) on the same Australian CD [probably just enthusiasm]
(o) Bo Didley on the same Australian CD
(p) Tales Of The Raggy Tramline on the EMI-Australia CDx2 "The Shadows Collection"
(q) Liquorice (for Licorice) on the Fremus CD "Atlantis"
(r) Peak Hoour (for the Krewkats' Peak Hour) on the same Fremus CD
(s) Johnny Stacatto on the Pickwick CD "The Shadows Collection"

I didn't even look at the vinyl collection, but speaking of vinyl EPs, who is Bruce Bennett?

Many thanks for that Lefje...and, of course, Jim. A very detailed listing. From "The Last Concert" (private CD-R). "The Rise And Fall." / "Kon - Tik1"

Whilst I was involved with "The Shadows At Abbey Road" - a handful of 'pre - production' CD-Rs (direct from EMI) contained various title errors - which I had to keep on pointing out were incorrect. "RaazMaTaaz" / "Which Doctor" / "Benosan" / "Socks On The Rocks" (15 / 7 / 97). All corrected by early August 1997 except that "Socks On The Rocks" had become "Scotch On The Rocks" - finally (after yet another message from me) becoming the correct "Scotch On The Socks". You have to check everything on these jobs!!!

"The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt" is commonly listed as "The Rise And Fall Of Flingle Bunt" on all maner of releases - too numerous to mention. The first spelling is correct. That's the title as it appears on the original single and the "More Hits!" LP from 1965. Curiously (as can be seen from eBay), many overseas original releases of the single back in 1964 spelt it the second way right from the outset. Very confusing.

Whilst on the subject of exclamation marks (Dance On!), Move It! & Shazam! should have the same;

My vinyl single of Do You Wanna Dance(?) has Do You Want To Dance on the label;

Kon-Tiki should have the hyphen;

Recently (Reunion CD) Gee Whiz It's You seems to have acquired another 'Z', i.e. Whizz.

Martin.

From the French album of "Dance With The Shadows" - "Zambesti"* (*unless of course that is the correct French way to spell "Zambesi"). Any further contributions most welcome.
