I think the only 'mistake' of "Theme For Young Lovers" on the 1990 2 CD set "The Original Chart Hits 1960-1980" is that it has its stereo image reversed.

Correct.

For some reason, when constructing my database around 1991/2, I attributed the first appearance of the glitch to "The Original Chart Hits", but as you say, it made its debut on the "Early Years" box-set.

Database amended accordingly... ;-)

I believe that this happened as a result of overseas EMI outposts and licensee record companies simply using a copy of "The Early Years"1 as a general resource for re-mastering - in essence, as a reservoir of ready-mastered digital copies. The same has happened with other seminal releases. Even the Fremus releases "Atlantis" and "Dakota" have been used as physical sources for Shads and related material.

[1 Or a release which had already been referenced from a copy of "The Early Years", in a "Chinese Whispers" manner.]
