You can also clearly see that they are using bloody big heavy strings too! Hank was only bending the thick unwound B string because the tune went that way!

Did I hear Hank fluff a note on Warlord??!! I'm sure I heard him accidentally hit an open string towards the end, but the crafty bugger kept playing and kept smiling and didn't get flustered- Bravo!!

Very nice sounds that Hank got - especially on I Could Easily Fall...

Couldn't wait for Christmas...

DVD arrived today and since I have the house to myself, watched it over lunch. Never thought I would see stuff like that again, In the fullness of time I will watch the other show but in the meantime it's great to have the Cliff /Shadows material available. Is there any more I wonder?

Yes, essential so we would know that the band was live and that Bruce and Brian were really doing what we saw and heard!

By the way, the excellent Memories are Made of This shows two contrasting things

1) why the merseybeat generation had left them behind
2) how darned good they were as a pro singing group - all 5!

This was not the rock'n'roll band of 5 years before
But it was the professionally most accomplished line-up at its peak

IMO anyway!

I wonderd why Hank didn't use Fuzz on the stage.

What do you think about it ?

Hi, Eugene,

From memory, The Warlord (the studio recording, that is) does feature fuzz on the lead guitar and is one of the first British recordings to do so, though obviously, produced in the studio in mid-October 1965, it doesn't pre-date the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction (a great record) for immediacy, but The Shads had already done that with Stingray, which featured fuzz on the Fender Bass VI.

The trouble really is that Hank didn't use a lot of distortion on either Stingray or The Warlord: it is barely on. In mono (which is how the recordings were originally issued on 45rpm) the effect isn't very noticeable, though later stereo reissues make the sound so much more transparent.

The rhythm guitar part on The Warlord is something else.

I recall looking at the single-sheet published music in early 1966 and nearly fainting when I saw that the chord part included the unknown Bb11. Bert's book didn't do flattened elevenths.
