Although there is already a thread on this topic (more or less) elsewhere; just a few thoughts...
One of my friends recently bought the new CD of this album and, having seen it (although not heard it), I have to say that I am disappointed.
The company (Talking Elephant) appear to have made no effort with the presentation whatsoever. Not only does the washed out cover look almost photocopied, but the insert consists of just one badly designed folded sheet, with very minimal information and no photos. What made me laugh (laugh?) was the way in which the band were credited, with Hank and Bruce coming first, but Brian being credited at the bottom, AFTER Alan Jones and Cliff Hall. Now I know that traditionally the drummer IS credited last, but surely a bit of common sense and/or research would have told them that in this case it was certainly NOT appropriate!
Obviously I cannot vouch for the quality of the sound, but I did notice that there were no bonus tracks, which in this day and age, are more or less obligatory. Fender Bender, at the very least, as the b-side of Equinoxe Part V really SHOULD have been included.
The whole point of this is really to say how sad I am at the shoddy and careless way in which the Shads back-catalogue is presented on CD. Had this have been a Stones or Beatles album (or probably even Wings!) it would have been given a super deluxe makeover, with a 40 page booklet, loads of photos, recording dates and information and a huge well-written essay by a well-known music historian. But because it's only the Shadows... It's just such a shame.
I had planned on buying this CD for my birthday, but having still got the album on vinyl (still in impeccable condition) and having got the previous CD release (picked up for £1.00 from a charity shop!), I don't think I shall bother.
Is it too much to ask that we can have more Shads releases on a par with the RPM release of Shades of Rock a couple of years ago? Or are they now destined to be given seriously lacking treatment at the hands of CD producers who just couldn't really give a damn?
