Fenderman wrote:I notice one of the bonus tracks is 'I can't forget' a track that i still find very moving. I believe if this was released as a single at the time (instead of 'Tomorrow's Cancelled') it may have been a hit but for some reason i think it was only released abroad.
By the summer of 1967, it wouldn't have mattered what material The Shadows released as a single, it would not have been any more than the minor hit that
Tomorrow's Cancelled achieved. I bought the single at the time and clearly recall being underwhelmed by the A-side, though I was very pleased to (at last) have a recording of
Somewhere (the B-side) with Hank at his best on Burns guitar and DeArmond tone/volume pedal. I bought a pedal of my own a few weeks later and still have it. Bruce was interviewed in a weekly music paper (probably Melody Maker) at the time, and he said that
Somewhere was stopping the show on live dates and they had wanted to get it out on record. Why didn't they put it on "Jigsaw" (in stereo), then?
The Shadows' Japanese-released album of late 1967 had the title "Pops In Japan" and contained this track listing:
1. Omoide No Nagisa
2. Kimi To Itsumademo
3. Londonderry Air
4. The Tokaido Line
5. Alentejo
6. Evening Glow
1. The Wild Roses
2. Gin Iro No Michi
3. Naughty Nippon Nights
4. A Thing Of Beauty
5. Let Me Take You There
6. Holy Cow
The UK LP "From Hank, Bruce, Brian & John" had the listing:
1. Snap, Crackle And How's Your Dad?
2. Evening Glow
3. A Thing Of Beauty
4. Naughty Nippon Nights
5. The Wild Roses
6. San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair) (v)
7. The Letter (v)
1. The Tokaido Line
2. Holy Cow
3. Alentejo
4. Last Train To Clarksville
5. Let Me Take You There (v)
6. The Day I Met Marie (v)
7. A Better Man Than I (v)
As we can see by that comparison, the inclusion of the four "Japanese rarity" tracks was done at the expense of all the vocals except
Let Me Take You There, plus
Last Train To Clarksville and Snap,
Crackle And How's Your Dad?. Six out, four in, with the length reduced from fourteen tracks to twelve.
The "Pops In Japan" LP was re-released on CD by Toshiba in Japan, coupled with the "Live In Japan" LP from 1969 on the same disc. The track listing was thus:
LIVE 1969:
Shazam! / Dance On! / Nivram / Apache / Exodus / Foot Tapper / Little Bitty Tear / Putting On The Style / Slaughter On 10th Avenue / Don't Make My Baby Blue / The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt / Somewhere / Little 'B' / FBI.
1967:
Omoide No Nagisa / Kimi To Itsumademo / Londonderry Air / The Tokaido Line / Alentejo / Evening Glow / The Wild Roses / Gin Iro No Michi / Naughty Nippon Nights / A Thing Of Beauty / Let Me Take You There / Holy Cow.
Although was before the age of the internet, Ian Kershaw of SCOFA made copies available and I managed to get one. Later still Magic Records in France released the disc referred to above, though it is now only available secondhand at prices which reflect its rarity and the demand.
