The War Lord - Question re Video

Postby donna plasky » 02 Aug 2012, 04:32

Hi, everyone. I was wondering if I could ask you -- especially the bass players -- a question about this video of "The War Lord." I have never played in a band and probably never will, so this is a very amateur-level question.

If for the sake of argument we assume that this is a live performance and not miming (and I cannot tell the difference any way), I was just wondering about John Rostill's place on the stage, up on the riser. He's so close to Brian and all that percussion action, plus the Vox amps are back there. Is that as "loud" as it looks...for John? If it were you, could you hear your bass guitar while standing that close to the drum kit and the amps?

I can see that the stage is fairly small, so I'm not surprised that everyone is so close together. I was more interested in why is John next to Brian, rather than in front of him.

Thank you very much, as always.

Kind regards,
Donna

That's a live performance, Donna...

And the closest amp to John is his own, so I guess he could hear OK...

The best place for the bass is in the centre, so he should be as near to the drummer as possible, although strictly speaking he should be on Brian's left, so that he can hear the hi-hat more clearly.

HI Donna

Don't forget that it is 'staged' for TV. John would normally be at the front in a 'live' situation.

Certainly looks and sounds live to me. The drumming in particular is fantastic - as good as on the recording, if not better...

Hi all,

I also believe that it was live, the sound is quite different to the original record. What I can't tell is if the Shads were miming to a live recording they did in the
studio or if they were really playing live when this was put on film.

Regards

They were playing live, on a live television programme. There was no pre-recording done. That was unheard-of at that time. I recorded the audio and still have the recording...

Despite any possible impressions to the contrary, the stage of the London Palladium (for that is where it was) is fairly large.

Looks like they were limited to using half of the roundabout stage section for a quick change over between acts!

This is the performance when Hank inadvertently hits an open string just near the end, as on this previous thread:-
