Interesting video from 1969

This clip often turns up on Freeview channel "Yesterday", in a programme called "Sounds Of The 60's". I saw it again last Thursday evening. It appeared to be a BBC/German TV co-production, possibly to mark the end of the 60's. I am sure that it will be on again, most things are, although with this programme there are no complaints from me, for a change.

They were asked to do it by the BBC. It was a programme on New years Eve 1969 to celebrate the 1960's. I was with the Shadows in December at Stockton Fiesta Club and commented to them that it was a year to the day since Bruce had left. There was the usual banter about Bruce being a lazy so and so etc and Hank said he would be doing this show with them to which Brian replied 'Well if Bruce is doing it, I'm not'!! It was a a joke and Hank said 'Well you're not doing it anyway, Tony is doing it'!!, as they wanted the original band to do it but Hank said he wasn't too sure if they could do it with Jet, who was not too well at that time. There was some great banter between them after that!!

They weren't the only ones to use old members. Paul Jones sang with Manfred Mann and Tony Jackson with the Searchers. So yes Brian was available but they wanted as near as possible to the original line up and Alan Hawkshaw wasn't included either.

Funny you should say that, Iain. I was thinking the same thing. I found this other clip which looks like it was from the same TV show. I guess 1969 is just about the time they all went their separate ways. When you look at how differently Cliff is dressed from the rest of the band, it's as though you can see it happening right before your eyes. Every once in a while, John looks over toward Bruce and smiles.

Ironic isn't it - they get Tony Meehan back into the line-up after an absence of, what, eight years, just to make it that little bit more 'special' and you don't get even ONE clear shot of him. In the end, sadly, it was a case of they needn't have bothered.

In response to the posting about "After Ten Fellas...Ten" - Hank definitely wore new oval shaped specs towards the end of the 60s (see the photos inside the gatefold of the Established 1968 album), but he (and Cliff) wore aviator style glasses throughout the 1970s, up until around 1980. I personally thought they looked pretty good on him and are as iconic as the ones he wore during the Sixties.

Yes, Donna, John often did that look and smile towards Bruce. Checking for approval? Sharing a private joke? Enjoying the groove? I don't know but it is noticeable from videos of that time.

One question:
was this the very final "for "one last time" appareance for Tony Meehan with The Shadows?

and of course.. Tony never played on Bachelor Boy before?

Is it true that also Licorice played with The Shadows again in the late 1960s?

Licorice played (at least part of) a short season at "The Talk Of The Town" (previously, and subsequently, the London Hippodrome), in 1968 or so.

Ray Coleman, the then-editor of the Melody Maker (weekly music newspaper), attended and enthusiastically reviewed the show, describing Lic as having played a "meaty solo" on Nivram.

Around the same time, he appeared on TV with the Shadows on "The Mike And Bernie Winters Show", and was announced by Mike Winters (the straight man) as "Luke Licorice". Mike (the clown) commented: "We're letting all sorts in here now". I seem to remember that the group played Shazam! on that appearance.

Hi, I was searching for some Licorice videos on YouTube and I found this one. It is from 1962, so it couldn't be any of the ones this thread is talking about. So, I don't mean to change the subject...but Licorice and the others played very nicely in this video.

The reason I am posting it is: At about 2:13, after finishing Wonderful Land, Bruce steps up to the microphone and introduces Cliff who is about to come out and perform The Young Ones with them. This is silly, but...it sounds like Bruce said, 'And now we'd like to introduce to you our vocalist, Cliff Richards." That is to say...Richards with an "s" at the end of the word. Do you think this was a little prank?

I am easily amused, aren't I? Even if Bruce is pranking Cliff, I guess most people would just say . But I'm thinking .

That was the 1962 Royal Variety performance. The John Dankworth Orchestra (playing African Waltz) was on the same show.

I thought they played Naughty Nippon Nights on the Mike and Bernie Show. I well remember the 'Luke Licorice' intro!!
