Colin P-J & Jimmy Jemain - "The Wooden Chair"

Postby donna plasky » 21 Aug 2012, 18:34

Hi. When scouring through YouTube, I found this Dutch TV interview of Colin Pryce-Jones and Jimmy Jemain, where they discuss the use of the wooden chair (aka Meazzi stand) in their concerts. It's a little past the 2:00 mark if you want to only see that particular part of the video.

I thought this was cute because we were recently admiring the lovely variety of chairs that appeared on the some of the Shadows sets in the old black-and-white videos. Colin makes a point, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, of saying it is essential to have a wooden chair if you are going to re-enact a Shadows peformance from the early 60's.

I was actually on YouTube looking for clips from Colin's solo album, and there aren't many. His album, Guitar Heaven, is very good IMHO.

Kind regards,
Donna

PS: I found this photo of Hank. It has nothing to do with Colin/etc., but I thought it was interesting.

Wooden chair? Essential piece of rock'n'roll equipment - stick a contact mic to the seat, plug it in and you've got the percussionist's equivalent to the tea-chest bass.

Or how about dancing? "If you can't find a partner, use a wooden chair" (Elvis, Jailhouse Rock)

Colin Pryce-Jones not only uses a wodden chair for his echo unit, just like Hank did in the early years, but if you look closely at the echo unit he is using, you'll notice that it looks very much like a meazzi drum unit. But it's not a genuine one, it's the look-alike model specially built for him with solid state circuits inside...

Nothing has changed - lots of us still use chairs in some shape or form to stand our amps on these days. Not much room in cars to carry stands around.

I bought The Fabulous Shadows DVD off ebay and if you watch it there is a wooden chair and a Meazzi Echomatic 1 Jennings Drum machine on the stage, the set up is identical to how Hank used have his , I think it belongs to Ritchy Rich, so I guess Colin is not the only one doing it, but he is no doubt Colin has being doing it the longest. Lets face it an alesis quad would not look too good or fit on a wooden chair.

The main difference between Ritchy Rich and Colin Pryce Jones is that Colin Pryce Jones can play the guitar.
