Me thinks the bass player is Steve Stroud....on Shake, Rattle and Roll (Cheryl Baker's - from Bucks Fizz - hubby). Steve played with Cliff for many years. He is a very accomplished bass player, used a bass without a headstock ?Steinman, ?Alembic or perhaps a Status, don't know.

Yes I lived in Essex for 25 years and saw Bucks Fizz many times and fell in love with the girls, happy days....probably won't make me too popular here, but Steve played with them as well, in the early days. He always produced great catchy bass lines.

Any bass players out there ? Well plug in some good speakers and listen carefully to Jet's basslines on Move It, fantastic runs which you don't often hear any more and each note followed the song. Sometimes we concentrate too much, quite rightly, on Jet's contribution to the Shads but just listen to his basslines driving the early Cliff songs, you can't get better than that.

He was undoubtedly the right man in the right place at the right time. Powerful driving stuff.
Which version of Move It do you mean?

The live version of Move It in the Youtube clip above.

Any chance of a note for note transcription ?

Hi Luigi, if you mean the version performed at The Event the bass line is very like what Alan Jones used to do. I'm less familiar with what Mark Griffiths was doing at that time but I would expect it to have been similar. Given the seamless quality of that production I do wonder how much of the playing was live and how much pre-recorded. I would not be totally surprised if Jet was miming there - and not necessarily to his own playing. I'm ready to be shot down by those who know better but I do know a lot of that sort of thing goes on in the interest of polish and avoiding hitches.

As to a transcript, I reckon that's possible :)

Hi Iain,

Thanks for that, another fascinating twist of electronic magic and alchemy.
Hopefully we'll see you with Ian McC at the Devon Shads Club in October.

Does this help at all? It is guitar and bass notation for Move It, but It does not explain the difference between Jet's version and Alan's version. Sorry it is a little crooked. My scanner is very difficult to use when scanning text books.

Kind regards,
Donna

Sorry Donna but not really. If this is the original 1958 sheet music (which it appears to be) then two factors have to be borne in mind. One is that the sheet music from those times tended generally* to be what the writer decided the notation should be, rather than what was played on the record (and the bass line written there is specifically not what you hear on the original single). Second, even if it had been a close attempt at it, Jet hadn't yet joined the Drifters when Move It was made, what you hear is session man Frank Clarke on a double bass.

Iain :)

*There is some sheet music available for certain Shadows tracks (Hits of the Shadows: Off the Record) which is a faithful reproduction of what all four of them played. This is, unfortunately, an exception!

Most Sheet music And compilation Music books of the time were written for basic piano accompaniment
and not what was actualy recorded onto records.
a lot wasn't even in the same key .
it was just a general arrangement with the melody line, piano/ guitar chords and a bass part for piano.
as far as i can remember it wasnt untill the mid 1980's when actual scores of the songs were being transcribed
and printed into books etc, this is around the same time when guitar tabs started to appear, rather than standard notation.

I think you are quite right there.

Most "live" albums are touched up etc before released.

R.Porter, who has the site http://WWW.CLIFFRICHARDSONGS.COM , which despite its title has a lot of Shads info, did the following research into "The Event " album,

http://cliffrichardsongs.com/TheEvent.htm

which you may or may not find interesting!

It certainly suggests there was plenty of tinkering!
