Jerry Lordan - All My Own Work CD (RPM)

Postby Arpeggio » 02 Sep 2012, 15:14

Long, long overdue career overview of the legendary writer of those all - time great instrumental hits - "Apache", "Wonderful Land", "Atlantis", "Diamonds", "Scarlett O'Hara" and many, many more. As well as composing so many Instro greats - Jerry also wrote songs for Cliff, Shane Fenton, Anthony Newley, Louise Cordet, Pet Clark and more. He was also a fine singer with several chart hits to his credit (eg "Who Could Be Bluer"). His first ever demo proper - 1958's "A House, A Car And A Wedding Ring" was covered by Dale Hawkins and was a minor hit in the USA. The UK version was recorded by Mike Preston. Although it wasn't a hit, a certain Joe Meek was at the control console. He was left to run the session virtually single - handed and it gave him the idea to start producing (as well as recording) his own sessions. Jerry recorded his own version for an incredibly rare 1961 solo LP - "All My Own Work" - for which he wrote all 12 tracks himself.

This brand new CD features the incredibly rare album in stereo (even rarer than it's also extremely rare mono counterpart) and every single one of Jerry's 6 Parlophone singles (in mono) and their respective 'B' sides. It's all fairly lightweight but catchy, well - crafted pop. All redolent of that sort of 'innocent' era between the inital burst of Rock and Roll and the first British Beat Boom - ushered in by the Beatles and their ilk. Great arrangements and absolutely superlative sound quality taken from the original EMI master tapes. Only two instrumentals - "First Romance" (another melody which colud have definitely been adapted by the Shadows) and the Johnny Spence Orchestra's version of "Apache" - which demonstrates that Lordan's 'meister work' could have easily seen service as a dramatic big movie theme. As a bonus, Jerry's own original demos (as sent to Jet Harris and Tony Meehan) for both "Diamonds" and "Scarlett O'Hara" are included. A CD well worthy of everyone's attention. An extensive booklet crammed with notes and interesting facts about Jerry's life and career (written by yours truly!!) plus unique photographs (courtesy of Dave Hawley and Claudine Lordan). This project has Claudine's full backing and approval. Indeed, she is genuinely thrilled that this CD is coming out. Just bringing it to everyone's attention. I don't know whether or not Leo's Den will be stocking this. The official release date is September 24th.

It's already listed at Bim-Bam Records, but not yet at Leo's Den who still have the formerly released "Jerry Lordan - The 50th Anniversary album" wich was published 2 years ago.

The Jerry Lordan 50th Anniversary CD was really a 'grey area' CD dubbed from vinyl. Also - all of the tracks (apart from the CBS single) were mono as no stereo LP was presumably available (it being impossibly diffcult to find copies) to the compiler. This RPM reissue is fully licensed and from EMI's master tapes. So, even if anyone reading this already has a copy of the '50th Anniversary' CD - then I would still say that you would need a copy of the new RPM compilation both for the superb sound quality and the booklet. Just my thoughts anyway.

It is really great to get all these tracks in stereo now. However, RPM missed the opportunity to include Jerry's Fontana and CBS single, which then would have combined ALL of his released recordings. (Collectors are never satisfied! )

I know Ulrich, I know. Naturally the existence of these singles was made known to Mark Stratford (Cherry Red / RPM supremo behind this release). Inevitably - it's down to licensing issues and, of course, money. RPM always pays the going rate to record companies, publishing concerns, artists royalties etc, etc. None of those apply to the 'grey area' CDs. Thus, licensing in the Fontana and CBS singles was judged to be too expensive in relation to the other 24 tracks. Jerry's demos were provided either courtesy of Claudine Lordan or Jet Harris aficianado, expert and long - time fan / collector Dave Holbrook (I'm not sure which as I haven't seen the finished product as yet). So, yes....it would have been great for collectors - but record label politics / financial demands made it impossible. But....it will still be a fantastic official release.

This is indeed a very great CD to check out, I think. I will see if I can get a copy.
I've read here that EMI has licenced out the original master tapes of Jerry's recordings to the RPM label. Now, if only EMI could be persuaded to do the same with The Shadows' BBC master tapes (there it is again!).
