Alan you may well be correct. I am not an expert in copyright law, I just said what I thought was the case. Anyway we've moved on from that, I'm glad to say, and Gillian has corrected the earlier speculation.

As to the BBC tapes, despite my BBC connection I am as baffled as anyone!

Iain, I could have done so also - remove my comments - but after the first information on Monday unfortunately the information, why the Shadowers compared to all other bands refused an upload of vidoes of their performance was not there and took nearly one week.. With the above clearing information I just can hope, that it does not take too long.

Shadowkarl

PS - I have removed some of the recent comments which were based on speculation not fact

Hi Gillian and Phil
Thanks very much for sharing your Shadowmania videos. I've seen most now and enjoyed them very much.
It was nice to see the very talented young players on stage with Bruce and all the bands were excellent. Being able to watch the videos was almost as good as being there.
Best wishes

By reading the thread I would imagine that The Shadowers have decided they don't want their performance made available. Whether others agree or not is beside the point. It's their performance and their copyright

Although I've read Gillian's subsequent post, I'm not quite sure that the above statement is correct.
The concert is promoted by BWML and it is the promoter who gives the right to access for photo's or video of his event. I once spoke to Bruce about this in the early 2000's when I did some videos of the event as I was aware that The Rapiers prohibit the use of recordings at their concerts, so I asked the question. Bruce said that there were no restrictions or special treatment of any of the bands and we (the public) were free to record, it was almost a condition of the bands appearing that they knew that video or sound recording would almost certainly be taking place.

Giving bands an opportunity to see what was recorded before making it public, is a courtesy but not a copyright issue imho. I simply draw your attention to the BBC tapes and ask who has the say in this long protracted matter? Not the band, the band were paid a fee to perform just as the bands at SM are/were.

I sincerely hope that no-one is going to be offended by this comment but I just wanted to respond to the quote I have highlighted in bold and underlined above...

Hilarious! I wonder who they think they are? Seriously. 'Prohibit'? I think that someone needs to get off their high horse pretty quickly!!!!

Again, my sincere apologies if I have offended anyone, just wanted to comment on the apparently ludicrous nature of this command from on high!!!!

Fair go Chris!

The Rapiers are, as far as I am aware, a professional group, which plays gigs and makes and sells their own recordings for a living. Although I live in Australia, I have been back to the UK and saw the band at Shadowmania in 2007, and in my opinion, they are the best band of that type around.

I think most professional bands etc which play live gigs would take a dim view of people making amateur recordings or video at their gigs, then up loading same to You Tube. At many concerts there are notices saying NO CAMERAS or VIDEO etc

I know it happens frequently these days, with every punter in the audience using video cameras or mobile phones to film or record the gig, but that doesn't make it right, in the same way that people involved in bootlegging and unauthorised recordings etc and selling, uploading or swapping or giving away these recordings are often pursued legally by the artists, their management or their record companies.

Professional musicians etc happen by definition to earn their living by playing and selling recordings etc, and it's not fair that they should get nothing for something.

Would you work for nothing?

I can't imagine amateur videos of any band being put up on Youtube would have a detrimental effect upon their work or income - indeed, it might even help them!!! People make allowances for non-professional sound and picture, for example, when viewing such things.

I noticed that there were no camera 'prohibitions' in place when Cliff and the Shads toured a few years back - apart from, I think, a request for no flash photography in case it put them off (as a sudden flash going off in your face CAN do!).

P.S. Would I work for nothing? Yes, if I enjoyed it. And I do... http://www.trentsound.com/girls.html

Hi all,

I hope everyone is in as good health and spirit as Bruce was during the last (I hope not) Shadowmania.
I wish I could have been there.
I watched the videos and all 4 bands gave superb performances. Thank you much Gillian and all.
All the young players (and the less younger ones too) did a fantastic job and especially Daniel who did everyone and Bruce proud.
Any video of the superb Shadowers?.

I wish some early tunes had been played with the mid pickup, but I guess the bridge is the trend now.
I thought David Martin was part of the great Legends. I couldn't recognize him.
I do hope that more shadowmania will be organized as I haven't given up to attend another one (and even more).
May God gives good health to Bruce to cary on.

Blessings,
Abel
