Apache - Release dates?

Postby nivram106 » 29 Sep 2012, 13:44

Hi All

Can one of you clever people help, I have four copies of Apache by the Shads on 7"vinyl singles. I know that the original Green Columbia DB 4484 was released in July 1960 but I would like to know when the other three were released. The second issue is on Black Columbia, number 8958, followed by an EMI issue (EMI 2573) that I think was 1977 to tie in with the 20 Golden Greats release. The last is another EMI release (also EMI 2573) on the cream EMI label with the oblong EMI logo at the bottom.
I have looked in Malcolms 'Shadows at EMI' book but can't find a mention of all of these issues. I am sure that some of you will know the dates (some of you will probably be able to give the time down to the second). Thanks in advance for your help.

The Black Columbia issue could be a 1972 re-issue. I vaguely remember reading somewhere they reissued this along with two other singles (FBI and Wonderful Land i think). Why they reissued it i've no idea. Not sure about the EMI issue though.
Sorry to be vague but i'm sure someone else with have more info! :)

Apache / Quatermasster's Stores was certainly re-pressed with the black Columbia label (the version with the large EMI-generic "45 rpm" logo) in early to mid 1963. But the single had not been deleted and so this was simply a replenishment of stocks, not a re-issue or re-release.

My first copy of Apache on a single was on that black Columbia label (still numbered 45-DB 4484), bought about May 1963. The older EMI labels (green for Columbia, red for Parlophone, kingfisher blue for HMV, etc) were only discontinued at the end of 1962, spilling over into 1963. The Shadows' Dance On! for instance (1962) was issued only on the black label, whereas The Beatles' Please Please Me (released 11th January 1963) was issued first on the last of the red Parlophone label then on the newer black "45 rpm" version.

Thanks for the info Roy & Jim, just the EMI issues to sort out now. When did EMI change to the cream label?

Apache was released in France later than in UK, probably in september or october 1960 (I bought it then, and still have it), but it wasn't on a single. It was on an 4 tracks EP with the addtion of Jet Black and Driftin (studion versions). It sold 1 million copies.

With the EMI singles I have the 'original EMI' 1977, in picture cover, as you say to tie in with the 20 Golden Greats tour. I don't have the cream issue dated, but I do have a cream issue of 'The Deer Hunter' which I have dated 1982. Maybe this will help someone else confirm.

Jim

You'll find the first three of your copies in the EMI book:

1 July 60 page 67
2 Nov. 72 page 324
3 Jan. 77 in picture sleeve page 345.

Your 4 is not included in the book as it's just a reissue of 3 with a different label. If it's of interest to anyone, both labels are clearly pictured at

Hi all,
There have been quite a number of re-pressings and (modified) re-issues of 'Apache'. I found out about the following ones:

S-GBR-45-DB4484-ca.jpg
The original release from July, 1960 with 'Quatermasster's Stores' as flipside

S-GBR-45-DB4484-da.jpg
The first re-pressing with black label from late 1962/early 1963

S-GBR-45-DB4484-ea.jpg
The second re-pressing with black label but missing the heading '45' in the catalog number, from mid 1963 onwards

S-GBR-45-DB4484-fa.jpg
Third re-pressing with 'SOLD IN U.K. ...' printed on the push-out centre, between February 1964 and July 1969

S-GBR-45-DB8958-ca.jpg
Re-issue with 'Wonderful Land' and 'F.B.I.' as flipside and different catalog number, released 24.11.1972

S-GBR-45-EMI2573-ca.jpg
Second re-issue again with 'Wonderful Land' and 'F.B.I.' as flipside and again a different catalog number and the shown picture sleeve, released 29.1.1974
Of this EMI 2573 re-issue at least two re-pressings have been issued (see the next post, maximum of 6 attachment) ...
