Royston Ellis

During last Wednesday's Radio 2 broadcast "Beatleland", there is a very brief clip (19.03 mins in) of the British "beat poet", Royston Ellis, accompanied by the Drifters (still, just) from a performance at Battersea Town Hall on 30th July, 1959, one of a series of Thursday "jive-nights" for teenagers staged by the local authority! Jet's Framus bass is much to the fore.

Hmm, although beat poets in the USA performed with jazz backing well before this, Royston reciting his contemporary beat-era poetry with a live rock band backing obviously pre-dated punk poet John Cooper-Clarke by nearly 20 years...as usual, there's nuttin' new under the sun!
