Perhaps his parents came from the Midlands or something he certainly had a Brummie twang to my ears.
I kept reading on the net that he was from Manchester but thought his accent odd for a Mancunian.

Coincidentally I just bought the DVD Look Through Any Window being the documentary on the Hollies.

He speaks quite a bit on the DVD and not that I'm an expert but Tony's accent certainly sounded like a Lancashire accent to me...

Anyway, he was, and still is a bloody good guitarist! And they were and are a great group!
The songs and performances were excellent, and they were and still are very good players, especially Bobby Elliot and Tony. I also liked Eric Haydock's great driving bass playing on the early stuff with his 'Jet model' Fender Bass VI..

I remember seeing the Hollies original line up at our local cricket club in the early 60s just after they released their first single "Aint that just like me." They were streets ahead of anything else we had seen up to that time, although the Stoke area had some good bands - the Maurauders, Vice Everett and the Black Orchids etc. I remember Graham Nash playing rhythm on an accoustic Gibson unamplified.

May as well 'swing the lamp' as well!! When I was about 16 I used to 'play the hop' from school and go up the West end with my guitar and go in the music shops, making out i wanted to buy an amplifer. I went into Selmers and asked to try out an amp. There were quite a few people in the shop. Anyway I played my best chuck Berry licks and the lad a few feet away (also trying a thunderbird) answered with a lick of his own. I responded (not being the shy retiring sort of bloke) and then this guy wiped the floor with me!! Yes it was Tony Hicks; nice guy and very good guitarist. Saw them many, many times live. brilliant!
