I remember in 1965(if my memory serves me right) a guy I was working with told me he had been to a private party that Hank had also attended and during the night he played jazz on his guitar, I remember being quite taken aback by this information being an ardent Shad fan and player at the time. Must have been correct then

Are you sure it's a duffle coat in your boot Jim?

It might be an anorak... ;)

Shame the video clip has terrible sound quality, i had to turn my speakers up to full to hear it.
And is that a cigar Bruce has in his mouth?

There are very good (both visual & audio) material around of this show, and I believe that Bruce (from memory) has a kazoo in his mouth.

(A question for the man in the duffle coat)

In that setting the Burns Shadows bass looks out of place. These days it is easy to buy a bass guitar with an 'round-hole acoustic guitar'-style body. If John Rostill had wanted one in 1968, was there anything available?

Not if you mean a bass version of the jumbo dreadnought.

Available options that might have looked less jarring would have included a sunburst Fender bass, or a Gibson EB-2 or similar 335-styled bass (preferably in sunburst, though blonde would have looked OK). Or even a double bass.

Maton guitars here in Australia made the acoustic Bindarra bass from 1967-1972. (Check www.matonmuseum.com.au)

Extra large, deep jumbo body, with full scale bass neck- either acoustic or with a pickup. They later made a short scale model too.

That is the earliest roundhole flat top bodied type acoustic bass guitar that I've ever seen, and that I'm aware of, although Ernie Ball made a similar bass in the US called the Earthwood sometime back then....

Gibson of course made f-hole archtop electric bass guitars and electric standup basses well before WW2- there is a music museum in Seattle Washington USA with a bunch of such electric bass guitars made in the late 1930's - long before Leo's Fender Precision... including a Vox Phantom style SOLID body bass made by an amplifier firm called Audiovox in about 1940!

Nothing new under the sun folks!

Apparently, Kay developed the first acoustic bass guitar in the mid 50s.
