Check out the sounds here... no EFTP and no Meazzi either...http://shadowmusic.bdme.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=173&hilit=50th+anniversary+strat&start=20#p1614

Does this sound like what you expect? (But I can get live sounds which seem to fit what you describe using a Q2 and Vox with EF86 front end, and very close to that using a modern Vox CC2...)

Hi John,

Have you had a listen to the sound files on the TVS web site: www.tvsspecialtyproducts.com ? They are in the jukebox under the Sound and Video files tab. There are also some videos under that tab. Hank did the Guitar Man album and most of the Reunited CD using his Kinman pickups that do not have that edge. I think he is closer now that he has fitted the CS54 pickups for the tour, but one has to remember that the early recordings also benefited from some massaging in the studio.

Hank didn't record any of the old classics using a Baby Binson. Those later tracks that were probably done with a Binson do not have that Meazzi edge at all and the echo is generally more bland.

Hope this helps,

Best Regards,

Paul.

I haven't heard a TVS in a live situation - but am looking forward to it - Cliff+Shads in Copenhagen 21/11.
But I actually bought a PB box a couple of months ago after listening to some soundfiles on the net. I find the TVS3 too expensive when you add tax+VAT.
So my solution was a PB box - which gives me the guitar what I wanted - the dry signal from the guitar direct to the amp - the difference in sound is stunning, when you bypass the Q2 and only uses the echo from the Q2. And the preamp in the PB box gives a much warmer echo - so it gives me a great sound with my KCP amp - the best sound I have ever had!

I can recommend this solution - not only moneywise - but also on the terrific sound you can get - and to be quite honest - I don't think I would be able to hear the difference in sound using a TVS3.

You won't hear a difference between the TVS3 and an EFTP programmed Q20 on the tour. If the venues were smaller then you could expect to maybe hear the more subtle nuances of Hank's sound, but on arena tours the distance between the audience and the speakers and the amounts of reverb that certain rooms generate mean that you're unable to hear details. It's the same reason that Brian's sticking to more obvious drumming, not playing in the more delicate style that we heard on the 2004 Final Tour.

Don't judge the echo by what you hear on the tour.

Thanks Paul,
I have listened to the Jukebox on the TVS site, you Gary and Spike play through the TVS3 and it sounds excellent, in fact hard to tell from the record
I might be barking up the wrong tree, it could be the JMI amp Hank is using that is sounding not quite right, or shall i say not what I expected.
His sound is certainly different on this tour, nothing to do with how far away from the speakers you are.
Hank uses a Strat with what appears to be Newspaper headlines printed on it uses it for one song only "C'mon Everybody" and that really does sound totally different. I supose it could be a number of things ? but as it is well documented that Hank is using the TVS3 I wondered what the difference was between
The TVS & EFTP, I have also read most of the pages on your site, it is a very well put together professional site, and I would imagine the unit will be the same.
I don't think I have explained very well what it is that I am hearing with this new sound, I heard Hank on tour with his son Ben in 2000 at the Royal Concert Hall
in Nottingham, and it was like listening to the original records on everything he played, he was running through a Matchless amp then, and I know the original
records he used a Vox. I am confused, and dont think I am putting it across very well. For me there is just something missing in his sound on this tour.
Thanks John

I guess that Hank Marvin is not using the full potential vintage sound of the TVS3 because he doesn't want to...

Brings back horrible memories from school days a zillion years ago when everyone else understood a discussion as I sat there in bemused silence until reluctantly I put up my hand to ask and bore the muffled sniggers from everyone else plus the frustrated  from the teacher, but here goes anyway:
What is a PB box, how can you bypass the Q2 yet still use its echoes and what is a KCP amp? :?

Reluctantly,
Martyn

UPDATE: OK - found the KCP amp by googling it although if I'm understanding correctly their website indicates it's no longer available. At just under £2000, it's hardly an inexpensive alternative but interested that Hank was involved in its design - does he ever use one himself?

the PB Box is a tone processor designed by Patrice Bastien who started to work on it in 2000. An improved model is available since 2004. It was the first device intended to emulate the Meazzi vintage sound when used with modern digital echo units. The more recent TVS2 is rather similar, the TVS3 adds an integrated analog echo unit.

how can you bypass the Q2 yet still use its echoes

It's only about bypassing the dry signal. The echo unit (Q2, Q20, or other) is connected to the PB Box trough a send-return loop. If the echo unit can be set to send back only the echo signal without the dry signal, the dry signal will go through the PB Box only et will be mixed with the echo signal in the PB Box. This allows different treatment for the dry and echo signal for a better Meazzi sound emulation.
The PB Box may also work with a echo unit which can't send back the echo signal without the dry signal. There is a switch to chose one of the two modes.

Hand used a KCP amp during the 2004 Final Tour, you can see and hear it on the DVD recorded in Cardiff. It's not produced anymore.
