According to Len Goodman's BBC4 documentary The British Ballroom Story, the great dance band era was finally ended by... Apache!

Some great footage, though not of the Shads, including Victor Silvester demonstrating the twist!

That looks like the Café de Paris (Coventry Street, Leicester Square) where Tommy Whittle and Barbara Jay were interviewed.

Played there a few times, more decades ago than is healthy... :(
