Magicstomps' & EFTP on Ebay

Postby dave robinson » 04 Jan 2013, 18:43

I have just had a friend call on me asking if I would take a look at his Magicstomp that he purchased from a regular seller on Ebay.

He had told me that he didn't think it sounded very good and doubted the authenticity of the echo patches. When I plugged it in and tried it, I immediately heard that the first four programmes sounded very wrong, little wonder he was disappointed. They are certainly NOT Charlie's patches as we know them. They actually sound crap.
My concern here is that my friend has contacted the seller to complain, but has been told that these are genuine EFTP patches and this is how they are - which clearly is not the case in my experience.

I have loaded these patches onto my laptop into the Magicstomp editing suite and compared them with Charlie's and they are not right.

The seller uses the name rayell1961_EFTP and is based in Worksop and has sold numerous Magicstomp pedals programmed allegedly with EFTP - all at inflated prices, I'm told in some cases up to £265.
On this evidence I would say to any potential buyers BEWARE of this seller.

I've sorted his Magicstomp and loaded my own EFTP with improvements onto it for him. He won't be keeping it anyway as he bought my first eTap2hw which blows it away in all departments echo wise.
This guy on ebay needs someone to have a word though, no way are they genuine EFTP patches and I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole. 8-)

Hi Dave,
Isnt it also not right to be loading your original Charlie Hall EFTP patches on to someone elses magicstomp.....I dont think Charlie would be too pleased....
I hope your friend isnt going to be selling the unit labelled with original Charlie Hall patches as it wont be registered.
Regards.

Who knows ? But having spent hours of work, they are more or less my versions of the patches now as all are edited and improved after learning from the real machines how they could be bettered.
At least I have given them to him and not shafted him the way rayell_1961 has done. If he does want to sell on his Magicstomp then we can re-load it with the crap it came with. 8-)

There are some good things on Ebay and I have benefited greatly through it thus far, but there are also cowboys out there who are ready to exploit anyone and any product in order to make a fast buck. In this case the Magicstomp that my friend brought to me for my inspection was NOT programmed as Charlie Hall would have programmed it. The echo spacings were wrong on the major tunes that we know and love and it was impossible to play Wonderful Land or Apache and hope to match the sound on the record. Also the patches were named, such as Sleepwalk / Apache / The Frightened City / Wonderful Land etc etc, rather than the way Charlie labels them i.e. ECHOMATIC 1 - LONG TOM & so on.
The reason that I feel so strongly about this is because I hate to see a hardworking guy who has paid an excessive amount of money, putting his trust in someone who has deliberately shafted him. I played him my sounds on the Magicstomp and he couldn't believe the difference and when he heard the eTap2hw that I sold him he was like a dog with two dicks . . .
I can't help everyone who falls for this scam in the same way, but I can try and make folks be aware. ;)

Agree 100 per cent about the eBay chancers. But I would also point out that many users of Charlie's EFTP progs (myself included) have renamed them giving them a track name so that you know what echo goes with what track. When I had my Magicstomp I totally changed the order of the echoes so that the tracks I played most often were the first 10 or so on the machine, and I also named them. In the cases where Charlie has 2 songs for the one patch, I would have 2 separate songs. I found that was much easier than trying to work out if patch 12 goes with Wonderful Land and so on. In mine, Wonderful Land went with Wonderful Land. Simples, as they say.
