On Saturday, 16. February 2013, Tony Sheridan passed away after a long illness at the too young age of 72.

Very sad news. It was his voice on My Bonnie - the record which alerted Brian Epstein to the Beatles. The rest, to use the cliche, is history..

Very sad news. He was born in my home city of Norwich and still made the occasional appearence here. Is it true that he was first choice to lead The Drifters/Shadows and was missing when Cliff and his management went to the Two I's and so a bespectacled geordie and his mate got the gig ?

Admired as a skilled guitarist (he had learnt the violin as a child), the story goes that as Tony was absent from the 2i's when John Foster arrived to hear him, another of the regular crowd, the late Rick Hardy (aka Rick Richards), suggested he listen to Hank instead... and the rest is history.

It seems it was his misfortune to miss out on the big time when the prospect of success beckoned at this point, and subsequently in Hamburg, but maybe that was the destiny of a character who liked to live life to the full.

Indeed, Tony Sheridan missed out on both the Drifters/Shads and the Beatles. I wonder if he and Pete Best used to meet for a drink and talk about what might have been?

Here he is backing a Cliff number, performed by another guy who later became famous! Sheridan's doing the Hank role, and the bassist and drummer are well known to us all. Just think, this backing group could have been the original Drifters line-up if the cards had fallen only slightly differently.




And what about the Hank singing role in the band? You be the judge!

The Daily Telegraph obit suggests that, with his Oh Boy! appearances, he was reputedly the first British musician to play electric guitar on television, the BBC having hitherto banned the instrument!

Yep, shades of George Harrison...

Yeah! What a great performer Tony was, and BB and Lic really into the swing with him too in both clips- ( nice bass spinning there Lic!)

I wonder how long Tony's poor little amp survived? He was really giving it some stick there!

If Tony's guitar (in those clips) suffered from weak pickups, his amp must have been either rubbish or no more than about 5 watts, perhaps both.

The sound's as distorted as they come, and not in a good way.
