If this is late March 1962, Jet, of course, is still with the group - just.

And the Liverpool *variety appearance" will take place in the week commencing Monday 23rd April - I was there on the Tuesday, but neither Jet nor Bruce would be present...

PS: I see that Michael Grade (now another Lord Grade) gets a walk-on part... This, though, was obviously the highlight of his career...

Cliff Richard and the Shadow at Rotterdam, Ahoj
NME March 2nd. 1962

Cliff & the Shadows visit Holland in 1962 for two gigs. On the 7th of April the audience was almost out of control at Ahoy in Rotterdam. The day after the roof almost went off at Gebouw Kunsten & Wetenschappen in The Hague. The Hot Jumpers (Dutch Indo Rock group) were the supporting act and get good critics and the compliments from Jet Harris, who was pictured together with Oscar and his Hofner bassguitar. In 1962 The Hot Jumpers were also the supporting for Helen Shapiro at Veilinghal in Blokker.

If that's the 1963 Pollwinners' Concert (and it certainly could never be a later one with the Springfields on the bill), the inclusion of the Beatles is marginally mystifying, since they can have had only one hit by the time of the decision to book them.

But Gerry & the Pacemakers? They'd only just had their first record release by April 1963. Perhaps this was an example of the famous Epstein technique: "You can have The Beatles if you also book..."...?

Gerry's 'How Do You Do It' was released on 14. March and topped the charts on 13. April (kicking the Shads 'Foot Tapper' off).

Oh, I'm sure those of us who are old enough all remember the meteoric rise to fame of Gerry & The Pacemakers.

But those few weeks were hardly enough time for them to be established so solidly as to be voted as pollwinners by the NME's readers!

Gerry and the Pacemakers will have been 1963 "special guests", I should think. Of course, the following year they'd be back as pollwinners in their own right.

The interesting thing is that the 1963 concert was not televised, though the 1964, 1965 and 1966 concerts certainly were.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to see a Jet/Tony and The Diamonds live performance from the period when Scarlet O'Hara was high in the charts?
