In the CD Guide the Take Special Care cut which has prompted discussion was designated 'Version B' and the bass part was credited to Brian Locking. Iain's ears are spot on, but perhaps forum members might like to have some background to the above entry for which there was no room in the book (many of the entries indeed have stories to tell!).

The session sheet names Brian Locking. Lewry/Goodall in their Cliff Recording Sessions specify Jet Harris, and that is very likely the source of one of the errors past counting in Rust's encyclopedia. I suspect that L/G were misremembering what Les Woosey and I referred to as 'Version A' of Take Special Care, viz. that laid down with Jet on 18 December 1961, a version set aside at the time but released on the Cliff Rock & Roll Box Set (Disc 3, track 13).

That account fits the recordings better. The earlier versions are percussive (in A). The later version is much smoother (in Ab) and Bruce, Brian and Lic have all massively improved their parts.

I wonder if the Ab is because it was played in A then slowed down, or because they tuned their instruments down a semitone. or (least likely?) that they played it in Ab?

Does anyone recall the Shads playing this live as part of a medley with Never On Sunday, that other popular tune with Greek associations, probably on Sunday Night At The London Palladium? I'm pretty sure it's not just my imagination, and it would be a typical Shads-type joke for that particular day of the week!

I certainly remember The Shadows playing "Never On A Sunday" on TV. I even have a recording of it.

But not "All Day". I'd never heard of that until I bought my original copy of "Dance On!". And I'm pretty certain that The Shadws never played it on TV as a standalone song,

Thanks, Jim, I guessed you would know - presumably, you had the old reel-to-reel at the ready whenever the Shads were due on screen. The memory is hazy here, but I assume Hank and Bruce were playing guitars, not bouzoukis!!

The Shadows performed Never On A Sunday on TV more than once, from memory (sort of second half of 1962). Always on bouzoukis!
