Remembering Jet

Postby Arpeggio » 18 Mar 2013, 21:45

Two years since we learned that Jet had sadly lost his brave fight against cancer. Two years on.....but Jet's music lives on. Jet's memory lives on. 'The Guv'nor' is still very much in our minds, thoughts and hearts. His legacy endures. To paraphrase a Shad's song: "Although a year has gone...the hurt goes on....I can't forget......I don't want to forget.........I can't forget.." We never will forget the iconic & much - loved bass legend.

Hi Rob,

Yes I remember when I was told Audrey had phoned while I was out and said to Mom it was urgent and she'd ring back later.
I had this awful feeling in my stomach and knew exactly what it was about..

RIP Jet!!!

Just glad I got to see Jet play live on the Marty Wilde tour in 2010 at Basingstoke ( as it happens where he was finally rested), he played so well that night, and had everyone in stitches with his jokes, especially when he came on during the encore wearing his hat and pulling his travel trolley ready to board the Isle of Wight ferry. I remember a friend who was more his age saying he'd seen him play in the 60's and how pleased he was he was still so bloody good, bit like meeting up with an old girlfriend and finding her still as cute, and guess what I went home, got out all my old Shads records with Jet on and went out and bought a bass guitar to learn, 50 years later he was still inspiring guys like me to take up bass, What a band up in heaven, John Rostill, Tony Meehan and Jet, cant wait to see that gig....

Having left instrumentals in 1964 for new music, it wasn't until l took up the Shadows a decade ago that l began to appreciate the mastery and style of Jet. What a talented bunch the Shadows were when they began, such a fortuitous combination of talent.

Our bassist Anna was just telling me yesterday that, although she had been playing with a successful band for some years, it wasn't until she happened to hear me and my friends cover the Shadows at a jamming party that she heard of them. She said what struck her was the beauty and uniqueness of the bass lines. Apache was particularly memorable to her for that reason. One can say it was Jet that drew her to playing the Shadows.

l wish he had stayed on.

Yes indeed, Jet is sadly missed here. Not a day goes by without him appearing in my thoughts.
I recently bought Jet & Tony's 'Diamonds and other gems' album and it's on my iPhone and iPad.
